3rd Gen. Cupholder

Does anyone know whether you can purchase the post 2000 center console and make it fit in a 1998. I have a 1998 ltd. and the cupholder, which is located above the stereo, is driving me up crazy and I don't even drive the car that often (it's my wife's).

The cupholder not only blocks access and view to the air ventilation controls but it is constantly vibrating causing fluids in the drink to splash out!

On the post 2000 models, the cupholder is located in the center console, right by the parking brake lever, which is relocated from center to the right. Anyone know if I can replace my 98 center console with the 2001? I've asked three dealerships and they cannot give me a definitive answer, other than the console will be about $350-400 and nonrefundable.

I'm about to get an '03 if I can't solve this problem.

cup holders

First off I am not sure if you can switch. On my 2001 the area on the cup holder only goes till the end of the brake and then ends. Here is a site selling wood trim for my 4Runner. If you look at the site look at number 14 then number 12. Then look at the other site that has a 96 to 98 and look at number 21 and 13. You will notice that number 12 on the 99 to 01 seems to match number 13 on the 96 to 98. My guess??? is that you just need the part just where the cup holder is and not the whole console. Hopefully you can find someone that knows exactly.

Great Answer

Wow, that is a great write up. After reading it, I thought their are some modifications needed. Trim the plastic, modify the emergency brake and then move some electrical swithces. This is more for a good mechanic or a great do-it-yourselfer. I don't think a Toyota dealership would tackle this job. Great find.

Thanks guys!!

It looks time consuming but I'll gonna give it a try. I'll be ordering the parts to do the job. Maybe I'll post the pics when I'm done.

I only have two button on the console; rear window and ECT. Do you know if the ECT button will have to be relocated as well?

Quadman,

Yup, ECT and window switch on the later models are located on top of the center dash.

Tough job, Quadman...indeed, tough job! :)

I have a good plan for cup holders which doesn't involve replacing your centre console. You can put it anywhere you want, easily. I am not going to let you in on the secret until I make mine. Unless you really want me to reveal it.

Fold it up when you don't need it.
