3rd gen died today

1996 4runner
Girlfriend driving the 4runner today and it died on her. I installed a new battery last week, its been driving fine until now.


Things happend in this order:

Truck's battery light came on and then ABS light came on

Truck started to putt and backfire

No power

Speedometer went up and down by itself

Pulled into driveway and she died

Sounds like an alternator, but thought I would ask here.

Another vote for the Alternator. Be sure to charge up the battery before you install it though, not good to put a high charging load on a fresh alternator.
 
Why not have it tested before replacing it?

I heard some states don't allow Free testing but someone has to have a volt meter (free at HB). Luck. :cowboy:
 
99% sure it's the alternator. I would replace it with another denso. The CS144 may be a performance upgrade, but being a GM part it may be a reliability downgrade.
 
Like the guy above me said. Replace it with a Denso. I also have an 88 Toyo van. There notorious for having the power steering line leak and fry the alt. About 6 years ago I had to replace the alt. I purchased a cheap after market from Oreilly. Lifetime warranty sounded great. I fixed the PS leak to prevent another fried alt. A year went by. Bad alt again. Replaced with another. Repeat that two more times. I put in 4 of those lifetime alts in 4 years. Then someone on another site told me to just get the denso. I picked one up off of Amazon for about 20 bucks more than those lifetime ones and haven't had to replace the alt in almost three years. Not having to pay for a replacement was great. Having to swap out the alt every year sucked. If you take my time into account that lifetime alt cost way ore than the Denso I have know.
 
Yup. All these cheap ass aftermarket parts ending up failing sooner even though that warranty is pretty attractive. Nothing makes a vehicle feel more like a constant project than an engine bay full of store brand and Mexico rebuilt parts.
 
Fwiw I bought a denso reman'd alternator for my 87 4runner. Quit working after about 24hrs. And it was reman'd in Mexico. Lol

It's the alternator. When replacing also check the power wires and ground wire to make sure they have good connections.

So many people think denso at the part store is same as Toyota denso. Nothing is further from truth. They are half the price built and Mexico and last maybe 2 years.

Just got a denso expansion valve and receiver drier from rockauto and they're made in China lol. Not sure what makes Toyota denso any different other than price and the pretty red box. Denso is just like any other international parts company with factories all over the world I'm sure.

The OEM parts they make are of a higher quality to meet the standards of car manufacturers.
