3rd Gen exhaust drone, standard?

My 01 had a standard aftermarket muffler on it when I bought it and I always thought it was fairly loud in the cabin around 1600-1800 rpms if you kept a steady speed. Baffle or something came lose recently and I had extremely loud buzzing/rattling so I had a local exhaust shop replace with another standard stock type muffler. Rattling is gone, but what I thought it might fix it has not. The truck still has that deep sounding drone around 1600-1800 rpms. Truck is quiet at highway speeds, and very low speeds though. I'm starting to think most 3rd gens are like this, as I have heard a lot of people complaining here, or trying to get as close to "STOCK" sounding as possible. Is this just our 3.4 engines, or lack of dampening in the cabin, etc,,?

I have a 200K mile original muffler. There's no droning at any RPM. I can hear my engine rev with an AirAid MIT, and get a little road noise on the highway, but I hear zero from the exhaust unless I stand outside near the tail pipe. A muffler properly tuned to the engine application shouldn't hit a resonant drone at any RPM.

Well that is my point, the people that are still running the stock mufflers are happy with them. It seems once you need a new muffler, and like me most people just get an OE like replacement, it is never as quiet.

Yeah, I had an idea to replace my muffler once upon a time but decided to keep the stock one until it dies. When it does, I hope I can find a replacement that doesn't drone.

If it's a true factory replacement you shouldn't hear any noise. My stock muffler was very quiet.

Are you interested in a factory muffler?

I have the same Deep Throat sounds at 1800rpm's.

It's no big deal really. It gets a bit annoying at times, but it was only 70 bucks installed, and of course is way quieter than my old muffler which was rattling like crazy. I would like a stock muffler, but I ehar they are quite a bit expensive and I'm not sure I'f it worth it to me to go to the trouble. Just thought I would see if anyone else had the drone.

Old thread, sorry...I've got the same issue I think. I bought a oem aftermarket replacement from autopartswarehouse.com (Bosal I think)....same droning, same rpm range, and now I have a crazy rattle at about 1800-2000rpm...thought it was my cat converter cover, but I put a strap around it and still have the rattle.

Does this sound similar as what you had?

whatever you do dont buy a flo master or a thrush i have a thrush and its really loud and annoying my buddy has a flow master and it sound just like mine but not as raspy With the snorkel and the exhaust mine makes quit a bit of noise, but i rather hear all snorkel and no exhaust

I was actually thinking about a magnaflow 18" but I can't get past the universal muffler not being precisely tuned to the truck...I can imagine you would get resonance at various rpms
