3rd gen exhaust system

ok everyone,

I need a little help with an exhaust system. I know I want to get a flowmaster 44, I really like the sound of that muffler. Now for the rest of the system?? What piping fits? I have had the hardest time find info on exhaust systems for the 3rd gen. Any info on a 3rd gen at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!

Not sure about piping but I have a vortex cherry bomb and it's the best I've heard personally on a t4r.

Stay with the stock tube size (I believe it's 2.25"). If tubing is too small it will create back pressure (the exhaust can't be forced out). If too big, the exhaust wont scavenge (the exhaust wont suck out the exhaust behind it. Poor scavenging reduces torque.

The tuner crowd actually loose power by installing big tube duals and quads.

Headers don't do much on a naturally aspirated engine, on a SC'd engine, they help.

A common consensus is that the 4runner already has an adequate exhaust piping diameter - opening it up anymore might result in lost torque. But again - this is hearsay.

You can try headers, but again, hearsay is that the install is a super pain and there are rumors of lots of failing header gaskets.

That being said, I have a flomaster 40, everything else factory other than a cut off tail pipe, and enjoy it. I think I would have been happy with a flomaster 50 as well.

Magna Flow Direct Bolt

The pipe leading into my rear cat was shot from too many Vermont winters, and was so rusted to the flange for the front cat, that I just decided to do the whole thing (not headers or Y).
I put in 49 state Magna flow front and rear direct bolt cats and a muffler.
The system sounds alot nicer than stock, but it is loud and it is definately NOT direct bolt. I had to take it to a local shop, because the rear O2 sensor bung was completely wrong and had to be cut out and replaced. And the flanges between the front and rear didn't seal up well at all.
I did pick up a little bit of power for my trouble, but not a ton. I'd have to say I'm now back to where I was prior to putting 32"s on it.
