I joined 11/2005. I searched by my "user name" and "find threads started by user". Mine came right up. Wow, what a noob I was 7yrs ago. LOL

First off, let me say "Hello Everyone" and I love the site! Tons of info on 4Runners.

I searched, but couldn't get a good answer to my question.

I've done all kind of mods to my '86 and '95 4Runners, but not only my knowledge of rims, but my newly acquired '99 4Runner is lacking in the wheel dept. Of course it has the 29" tall tires and the "Ford Explorer" look-a-like rims, (being 2wd) neither of which I like. My question is, can I put the '05-'06 4Runner Limited Rims (the large 17" 5-spoke style rims) on my '99? I plan on purchasing the same size tires the '05 model 4Runner comes with: 265/65/17.

Will I have any issues w/ running this setup?

January 11, 2009, just a day after I bought it used:

"Howdy all. Yesterday I took delivery of a 1999 T4R limited. It's quite nice, and I'm looking forward to owning it for many years. It has 131,000 miles on it, and the timing belt (and I assume the water pump) was changed at 113,000. That's about all I know of the maint. history. It looks well taken care of, though.

Anyway, I will probably never user the roof rack, so I want to take it off...at least as much as possible. I haven't been up top to check it out, but I wanted to see if anyone had done this.

If nothing else it might improve my fuel efficiency by a smidge.

Just wanted to say Hi! I've been around for quite a while, but never got around to registering until now. I'm on some of the other 4Runner forums too, with the same username. I don't post often, but I read the threads almost every day.

I've had my truck for 4 1/2 years now, and have done quite a bit to it after seeing what others have done. In fact, I just finished building a custom front bumper. Here are a few of my favorite pics:

My first post - asking about Rear Locking Differentials

My first post was asking about Rear Locking Differentials in hopes of discovering that my newly purchased 4Runner had rear lockers. Sadly no... I was such a newbie then - in a month and a half though, I have learned SO much, that seems like a noob question now...

I have a 1998 4Runner SR5 4WD with a four speed automatic transmission, and I've read that the rear locking differentials are optional on ALL 4WD *except* those with automatic transmissions.

Off-road enthusiasts will find improved low-traction performance available through a locking rear differential, optional on all four-wheel drive models (except SR5 models equipped with automatic transmission). Sporting a 4.3:1 differential gear ratio, this feature locks the rear wheels together while in low-4WD, forcing both wheels to turn together.

What does this mean? That my 4Runner does not have a rear locking differential? If it does, how can I use it?

I am new here and have a 98 3.4 with Auto tranny. I am wondering if it has a lock up converter? If so can a manual lock-up switch be installed? I have done this on a 700R4 in a hot rod, but would like to do it on my runner to help in steep downhill kinda like the Downhill assist control on the 4th gen with out the EBC added. Thanks and lots of good info as i have seen on other threads.

Hi All,
I just bought my first 4runner this weekend and already have some work to do on it.

I got a 2000 SR5, automatic, dark green with the hood scoop, 102k miles on it. It has the leather interior in surprisingly good condition.

Now the negatives. After driving 4 hours home from the dealership in northern Vermont, I found the entire tailgate was spattered with some kind of smelly oil. A little poking around revealed that it was differential fluid. The undercarriage in the back is super rusty (like pretty much all New England vehicles), and apparently it has rusted through the diff housing. I have been reading up on this problem here and found I am not the only one with this problem. There was no sign of this problem until I drove it home on the highway, nothing showed during the test drive.

I am going to a salvage yard tomorrow to check out some potential new rear axles to replace it, so my first project on the 4runner will be to replace the entire rear axle; a little trial by fire I guess.

I am super frustrated that I discovered this right after buying it (vermont has no used car lemon laws to my knowledge, just as-is sales), and bummed I can't really drive it right now.

If you have any advice for me, I would love to hear it.

This is 50 mph impact with an oncoming car (not a head on), my daughter and her friend came out without a scratch. All I can say is try that with safe little car and see what you get. In my opinion body on frame is the way to go.

Hi everyone,

So this is my second 4runner I've bought, but the first time using the site. I've owned toyotas since my first truck (1987 4runner).

I just bought a 1995 auto 3.0 with 115,000 miles and a blown head gasket. I have a connection at the local toyota dealership and got all of the work down for a good price. I put some 31x10.50 Big O Big Foot AT and painted the rims black.

I'm looking to cure the sagging rear end, put some new headers and exhaust system. Maybe even regear, but that will have to wait a while.

My previous 4runner was an 87 4runner with the classic 22re. I would still have it, but unfortunately someone totalled it. Hopefully in the next few years I'll be picking up a new one.

When I joined in 2006, I had owned my 4Runner for seven years and been on YT for a while. So my first post on Nov. 11 2006 was about the ONLY thing that had gone wrong with my truck to that point:

It's the clock. Search this and other forums and you will find many with the same problem. Part is $300 from dealer and used ones go around $70 on e-bay. Good news is this is the ONLY thing that EVER broke on my '99 SR5 (not counting abuse). I just use the clock on my Alpine H/U. I verified that the switched power lead on my car is fine. I took the silly clock as far apart as humanly possible and I can't trace the fault. I suggest you give up and enjoy the rest of the car.

I'm pretty sure this was my first post.

Here are pics of it the day I brought it home.

Since then I've lifted it 3", new rubber and wheels, tinted the fronts, new thule rack and a new exhaust. Far from done. Trying to decide now what to do with the running boards. I like the looks of them without better, but I also like being able to get to my rack with surfing.
