3rd gen mpg

I had A 96 4runner that got 23mpg last summer on the way to the coast, thats with the runner loaded pretty good, and running the a/c the whole time. Anyway it got rolled and I just bought and 99 sport, the best it has got so far is 21 not loaded or running the a/c, same size tires, exsept the 96 had 15" wheels instead of 16" Anybody know any tricks to get some more mpg?

You're pretty much right on target with mileage with a 4Runner.

Was your '96 a 4banger,2wd,5 speed?

I get 22mpg with my 4wd automatic equipped 4Runner on the highway and 16-17 around town.

Once you are at highway speed loaded or not it doesn't really make a difference as much as you'd think.

The 96 was and 3.4 auto 4wd just like the 99 I just bought, exsept for the sport package stuff. Maybe that 96 was special or something cause I checked the mileage all the time and If I took A road trip it got 23mpg most of the time.

Do you know of any aftermarket upgrades that can help the mpg? I have heard A cold airintake helps, and A throttle body spacer, but that is just some things I have heard with no real proof.

Nothing will really help except a light foot.

Throttle body spacers do absolutely nothing on a direct port motor no matter what anybody tells you.

Opening up the airbox (deckplate mod) gives a you MAYBE 1mpg but I haven't seen it but the mod was so cheap and easy I couldn't resist.

A screen is a good idea to keep larger debris from the filter itself

It must be your hood scoop that is the cause of all that drag...

I am willing to bet the 96 4Runner's tires were smaller than your new tires, which means the odometer would show you went further than you actually did. That would equate to your 23MPG. Fully loaded with A/C, I cannot see you hitting 23MPG.

21MPG is a smidgen above the average for us 3.4L Toyota's. You won't see too much above that...unless you rig up a sail and put it in neutral.

Hey, that did cross my mind, Off the subject but I see you live in Denver, I am looking at this civic that was originally from Denver and was there awhile, I was wondering about rust (cause of the snow and salt) are cars from Denver something to stay away from because of that or not. The pics show no rust, but who knows.

My truck is a previous Cali truck but has seen it's 7th Denver winter (4th in my posession) and I'm pretty good about spraying after snow storms and I haven't had any issues.
