3rd Gen Possible Blown Head Gasket @ 195k

You having a head gasket issue?

Engine overheated and blew both heads because my radiator cracked and spilled its guts. I'm at school so don't have a garage or shop otherwise I would pull the engine. Right now the engine is torn apart in my apartment parking lot and I have some heads that aren't warped and need a gasket kit for cheap to hold me over for awhile. I don't want to pour anymore money than the minimum needed since I'm not going through the engine of doing anything else, and I would rather swap it or do a proper rebuild and build the engine up in the future.

Thank you 4Runnermex and I have a FSM as well as a Haynes and have torn a few engines down in the past so I should be set.

College life strikes again. No garage, $200 to my name, got my tools, better rebuild the top end haha. Good thing I'm a savvy mechanic :)

Well that'll be fun.

Try the gasket kit I suggest it, I've done all of my HGs with this kit and haven't had any issues. Customers are still on the road

Pressure test and resurface the heads. I get them done here in SA for about 140.

Quickest fix would be swap the engine.

I know my guys have one here for 600 and one for 400(needs some work)

if you want I can ask them about shipping. If you have any questions or need a head. I have about 5 sets here.

Ah, man. This is where I am at right now:Cry: Last Sunday morning I tried to start my '96 and, yep, NOPE. Lotsa bad language :tape2:, a tow truck, and a week later I am facing the same question. My Runner has 192k on it and is in pretty damn good condition other than, you know, THIS:

Did u fix this?

Not yet! Just went an looked at an engine today - it's in a 1999 SR5 4WD/AUTO

and my V6 is a manual but looks like it'll work.

Only drawback is the motor has 240k and mine only had 192k.

It'll work, harness and clutch swap. Check the tbelt and if you can look in the engine thru oil filler cap you can see if it's clean.

How much?

I hate to do this but...

I hate to do this but I am going to have to resurrect this thread since I can't create one.

So I bought a 1998 Limited with 182,000 miles really cheap. After driving for a while I determined that it had a bad gasket or a bad head, so following the youtube video, which was great, I took both heads off. Unfortunately, both heads were cracked.

Instead of buying two new heads to put on a block that had 180k, I decided to go the JDM route. The motor I bought looks great and very clean inside and out. After doing the swap, the motor ran perfectly for a second and then things went to crap. It turns out coolant was gushing into the head on at least the passenger side and possibly both. I took the valve cover off to find pools of oil/coolant mix on the head and my dip stick shows that I have coolant in my oil.

So after all this, my question. Could I have mixed up a hose or two that cause coolant to be forced into the head? I just can't see how that much coolant could have passed through a blown gasket in that short amount of time. The new motor has been running approximately 5 minutes total. I appreciate any help on this.

So I removed the cooler and replaced it with the cap that came with my JDM and ran the hose directly from the water pump to the port on the block and it is still mixing instantly.

I still think that it is mixing way to fast to be a bad head gasket or even a cracked head. Even with no gasket it couldn't be mixing this fast.

Anyone have any ideas?
