3rd Gen Rear Ladder

Hey everyone,

I've been wanting a ladder for the back of my truck for a while now, but I don't know where to look anymore. I've contacted BajaRack twice to see if they would bring their design back and they said no both times. Drabbits kindly said they wouldn't be interested and recommended I get a Gobi. WMW doesn't do any sort of roof rack related stuff anymore. I'd like to stay away from Gobi due to personal reasons that have been hashed out many times on this forum so I don't really want to get into that here.

Basically I'm wondering if anyone has any other solutions as where too look for one?

If not I guess I'll just have to suck it up and go with the Gobi one, I'd rather not, but I also don't want to be holding myself back from something I want/need because of something like this. You only live one life and it's short enough, might as well have what you like is kinda the attitude I have towards this. Just wanted to see if anyone else had any suggestions.

Funny how when you start to think of ideas then you come onto the forum and BAM! someone posts about it. My buddy has a welder so he's going to help me this summer build a custom rack and ladder. I'm going with a side ladder because I like the unique look. I need to build a roof rack strong enough to hold me for photography.
He's a picture of how I'm going to base mine off of.

Aluminess makes aluminum ladders for SUVs. You might check with them to see if they can modify one of their existing ladders to work on a 3rd Gen.

If you do hard wheeling on narrow trails that side ladder will cause problems. I have body damage right where that ladder sits, and didn't even feel the impact. I'd stick with a rear ladder to prevent getting hung up.
 
I'm going to building one to go with my rack that I'm making....

I'll post pics when I get it taken care of. Don't know if I'm going to go with the 3/4" square tube I have, or the 3/4" pipe.
 
With a little welding skills they are not very hard to make. Here is a version of a hitch mounted rear tire carrier I made for my old 99.

I thought Baja made one, or at least they were going to. I think your only option besides building one is Gobi.

You have a WMW rack right? If so maybe talk to Josh to see if he can fix you up with something. One good option would be hinging the ladder to the rack, and have it attach to the lower part of the hatch.

I've never seen that ladder, that looks great. That's the same reason I want one mostly. To get up there easier and take pictures and get a better view of wherever I may be.

That looks really good!

I've thought about trying to incorporate a ladder into a rear bumper, but I'm not sure when a rear bumper is in the works or if anyone would be willing to modify their bumper to fit a ladder, such as CBI.

Baja made a couple a few years ago, but apparently they were prototypes and they don't make them anymore. I do have a WMW rack, I talked to Josh about it, but he said he's not interested in making one after all the other stuff that happened. I do like the option of hinging the ladder to the rack though.
 
I think I read somewhere that in time, Savage will be making a dual swingout option that includes a ladder if desired.

Yeah I saw that, I'm just not totally sold on their design looks wise yet. I'll have to see what it looks like once some members get theirs delivered and installed and some real world pictures taken.

I'm in the same boat as you. If I ordered one, I think I would ask for the side panels to be filled in instead of holed. I really like the low profile look of it plus all of the options that are supposed to come out for it.
 
Well I broke down and ordered the Gobi one. $210 shipped to my door, and I should have it early next week like Monday or Tuesday she said. I didn't want to order from them, but for the price and the ease it's the best option really. I also know it's designed right and should hold up. It'll also make getting on the roof so much easier, especially for shorter people who can't pull themselves up off the tire haha

Before all the lawsuit stuff this was my plan anyway and my little drop in their bucket by just buying a ladder won't make or break them. I didn't buy the HD shocks though. $145 seems pretty high for a pair of shocks (I spent less on my rear suspension shocks...) I'll see how my stock replacement ones do, and if they need to be replaced with something stronger I can probably find some auto parts store ones that'll work for less money.
