Hi all,
This is for a 3rd gen 4runner. I assume it will fit all years but I cannot confirm that (though I have no reason to think it wouldn't). I have a 2002.
Long time user but also been long absent from this forum. I've got a build thread but have not kept it up to date in a very long time. If you read the thread (link in my sig), you will see it has gone through a few interior iterations. I'm now ready for the next iteration as my needs continue to evolve. So now I am putting up my rear cargo set-up for sale.
It's a pretty simple set up. Flat and lots of d-rings for safety. Piano hinge so you can still access the cubby hole under the rear seats. This set-up was about maximizing use of space in the rig. You can use it as a sleeping platform or as a way to carry all your gear.
For my use, I had all my personal gear (clothing, camera, dog) placed in the front area (where the rear seats used to be). Lots of d-rings in in this area so you can properly secure all the cargo. Last thing I want is something loose flying around and hitting me. I re-purposed one of those car trunk grocery nets that most cars come with these days, along with some caribiners.
The black box you see was spare parts and tool storage. Extra fluids also went in there. This set-up was used in lots of short, weekend camping trips but was purpose built for the week long Baja XL rally. Behind the black box is still plenty of cargo space and even more d-rings, to hold down camping gear and a fridge too.
You will get the gray platform with all d-rings except the OEM ones (those I am keeping). You will also get an emptied black box.

Start of the build. 3/4" plywood, cut to shape. There is a little extra notch carved on the right side behind the rear wheel. I did this to create some space for the anderson plug that is used by the fridge.
Carpeted and test-sit. You can see the OEM d-rings, which hold the board in place. Piano hinge across the front.
Front of the finished product. Extra pieces of 2x4 to level the front. This area easily supports the weight of humans. You can sit here but I wouldn't recommend sitting here while driving. The black box is removable.
Rear of the set-up. Lots of d-rings, again to properly secure all the cargo.
