The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has released statistics comparing accident death rates among a large number of 1999 - 2002 model year vehicles. The 4Runner was second best overall and the safest SUV surveyed, bested only by the previous generation Mercedes E-Class sedan.

Worst was the Chevrolet Blazer 2-door, which had a death rate almost 30 times that of the best vehicles.

Sure do like my '99 .......Car & Driver winner of SUV of the year that year...and now the safest SUV on the road!!
Yeah the '99s are sweet (especially the Highlander edition), but I would not state it being the safest SUV on the road. It is the safest SUV of the model years that was included in the statistic ;): The newer models from all the manufacturers have not had enough time on the road to collect the stats yet, but if the teend holds true the new SUV will be even safer. Good for all of us.

That would explain why my insurance dropped going from a 2004 Sentra to the 2005 4runner, even with 4WD. :D

You beat me to the post! LOL :-)

Just read the news today in the Chicago Tribune. I have a 2004 (which I love), but also like the previous generations. I am very pleased to see that 4Runners rank so high. My mother will be pleased to see her RX300 is number 4 on the list.

The full report is now available in .pdf format at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's website at the following link:

Take care everyone.
