Im seriously considering getting the TRD supercharger for my truck. Now i was wondering if anyone on here with a 3rd gen has done the install, and if so has a link to, or has the directions and maybe could tell me whats all involved, things to watch for that kinda thing. and also if it is worth the 2 grand!

after i posted that i just found that link on here. im most likely not going to get it after seeing all that. beefing up the tranny, getting a tranny cooler, chipping the ecu, blah, blah, blah...doesnt seem like its worth it to add to a vehicle with 77,000 miles on it. although it would kick ass!:D
 
well once it was done, i doubt youd be saying that! the horsepower gained is amazing.

ill probably s/c in the future, once i get my truck lifted, and off-road capable.

the other problem is... high octane gas! :mad:

Guys, the gas sucks, especially when you are getting 13mpg, but the $ is well worth it. As far as the tranny cooler and fuel mods i can tell you this...
1) on my taco i had a gen 1 s/c with no tranny cooler but i did have fuel mods(it ran very strong except in 4 hi on the beach for long periods, this caused the tranny to heat up)

2) on my 4rnr i have just the s/c and gadgets "free FMU" it runs fine, plus you dont put alot of strain on it everyday

as for miles my 4rnr has over 100k:D
 
I asked the dealership, they said it would cost 2990 for just the s/c then additional labor charges....is that a 'fair' price? They never told me about any other mods i should add with the supercharger. I don't drive hard on daily driving, but it would like it for the extra push driving on steep hills when going snowboarding.
 
CONSIDERING YOU CAN FIND THE KIT ONLINE W/7TH INJECTOR FOR LESS THEN $2400 AND THE INSTALL IS EASY, I WOULD DO IT YOURSSELF AND SAVE THE $...IF MECHANICALLY INCLINED!

thats a fair DEALER price, yes.

trd sells this s/c and doesnt really address the pinging issue that follows its installation.

that problem is solved by the 7th injector and other mods.

Thats way cheaper than what the dealership quoted me for. The problem is, I'm not very mechanical inclined...so i don't think i can do the install myself. Do you think the toyota dealership will bitch if i bring the part and just pay them for labor...even though the labor will cost as much as the s/c.
 
do a search on trd.com(trd's website) or Yotatech.com. Look @ the directions before you decide not to do the install. I did this install w/NO directions, its not too bad.

Another thought is to look for another board member in your area to help you out for say $100 and a case of beer!! look for these other members on yotatech.com, and also your local ttora.com(tacoma territory)

Here's my set up with fuel upgrades and lots of other goodies... I put out a little over 300 HP over the stated 183 HP spec sheet... these are cranking values...so you can see that is a very huge difference... Felt power wise, I can smoke my tires from a stand still on 1st & 2nd gear...this is with an Automatic now too... It may cost you but by my experience with the supercharger & fuel upgrades it is well Damn worth it, many serious enthusiast will say the same...:p

Here is another PIC of my good friend Dave's set up-- He has a 2004 Tacoma and is one of the most powerful supercharged 3.4L engines right now... he puts out over 350 HP at the crank and can smoke his tires on 3rd gear with an automatic also...He runs the TRD 7th Injector with Water injection 2.2" smaller pulley while I'm running the URD fuel kit... check out his burn-- I wasn't able to get one of my rig yet but maybe later... Gas wise you'd be sursprise-- I get between 16 to 18 MPG while Dave is getting 18 to 21-- with a properly tuned engine normal driving should have minimal effect unless you start mashing the pedal to the floor all the time which I absolutely know is hard to resist...!!!

thats awesome! im so jealous right now! in a perfect world i would buy it tonight. but im looking seriously at the money aspect, and longetivity. i want my truck to last for as long as possible, without any hitches. no matter what, when you start changing things like that, the weak link will go, its just a matter of when.
 
Like everything else on your truck things will wear or break down regardless of what it is, the key here is maintainence... as long as you well maintain your vehicle it will last forever...

I have had the SuperCharger on my 4Runner for nearly 5 years now with no major problems or hitches whatsoever-- and she still runs strong as ever-- stronger to say the least especially with the fuel upgrades and me learning how to tune it myself...I did not do all the upgrades all at once and yes money is always an issue... but if you really want your truck to perform well and stand out from all the rest, again I say it is Damn worth it... If you can only test drive a fine tuned Runner like mine or my friend Dave and I guarantee you will think twice...:p

i'm not going to lie...i'm jealous.

I want to see some burnout pics with your 4runner!!! Even though those tires looks quiet sticky. The Taco was all nice, but its a 4runner forum! (jealous of the taco too) Clips would be even better...think about that. hahaa.
 
I put the TRD SC on my 96 4Runner SR5 4wd...it took about 4hours.

I also did the TRD tranny cooler and the "free fmu" was then part of the trd install instructions ;) It pinged a little for the first night and next day/night...then the computer made the adjustments and no pinging from then on.

The truck had 110k miles on it when the SC was put on...I had taken perfect care/maintenance of that 4runner so it was in perfect shape. When I sold it, it had 135k miles and never had one problem. Auto never slipped...never pinged (guess I was lucky)

My 96 4Runner with the SC ran 9.7 sec in the 1/8th mile and 15.6/15.7 in the 1/4mile...not bad ;)

I would definitely recommend the SC...i couldnt imagine driving my 96 without it...it makes SUCH a big difference. One of the reasons I bought my 05 was to experience the trd SC on toyota's V8 and all-wheel-drive..but, like others waiting on TRD, I dont think that will happen now :( I love my 05, but would love it even more with another 100hp ;)

And I always use 93octane in all my vehicles before and after the SC ;)

I havent' gotten time yet to shoot a good PIC of my burn out especially since it has been raining for the past two weeks... Yes my tires are not meant for Drag they are ALL Terrains set up for off road... that's why I was surprise to see that the power in my truck was still able to burn these tires regardless...Sometime next month Me & my friend Dave will go to the drag strip here in Sonoma County to get some time on his Tacoma as many are requesting-- Like I said he has the one of the most powerful supercharged engines around and even though it's a 4runner forum we do run the same engine... I plan to take video clips instead of PIC and will take some of my Runner also... will post as soon as I get them...:)

what kind of wheels are those? i like them, i havent seen many wheels that are actually cool looking on 4runners. and stop posting pics of your truck youre making us all jealous!:D
