3rd gen T4R with 1KZ-TE sold in what countries????

Hi all,

Recently have been searching for a 4.2L HDJ81 but it's looking pretty likely that I will be in Japan for a good part of the year, for the next few years - so I decided to put my Land Cruiser budget towards this rig when I am living there anyway.

Still, had my hearts set on a diesel. I started thinking about giving my runner to the wife and getting a diesel anyway.

I am wondering if anyone knows where I could sort a T4R with a 1KZ-TE? I think Central America but not sure where exactly. Note that I'm not looking at a surf I'm looking for an lhd 4Runner with the same engine in some of the surfs from the same year range. Any input is appreciated..

I believe Costa Rica and Panama has the 4Runner 1KZ-TE model from 2001-2002. for 1996-2000, it had the 4Runner 1KZ-T model.

As I know, T4R with 1kz-te was supplied only for UN units - it is a special equipment with manual transmission, and all empty by interior.
I've seen 3gen 4 runner only once for three years. It was from UN garage and rebuilt it with spare parts from Hilux Surf 185.

Why not to swap diesel motor in your car? One guy swaped 5vze instead of 2lt-e

Thanks man. Overnight I have slowly figured these countries have 4Runner or the "hilux sw4". Thanks for narrowing down years with those engines.

Hi mate, thanks so much for your input. I see your location and after looking in classifieds in your area I believe it, although seems central and South America this diesel variant of either 1kzt or 1kzte is more common that the gassers

I am happy to have a swap done, but my woman loves my current 3rd gen and I'll be away a lot for the next few years ...so looks like she will inherit it! It gets very cold here...you know...women...I think it's better she sticks with a gasser year round especially if I'm not here as much.

Hilux Surf in Japan, but that's right hand drive, and not technically a 4Runner.

The diesel isn't *that* great.

Here's an ad for a Diesel SW4 from Brazil, just so you can get an idea. 1998, lifted, good condition. You can be confident the only salt it has ever seen would be at the beach. My '97 has zero rust.

He doesn't say Diesel, but the 3.0 gas was NA (what mine is). So I'm pretty sure it's Diesel. They were more common than the gas.

R$35,000 is about USD$11,000. Imported machines cost double or triple what they cost here new so used prices also run higher. Add in transportation costs and Brazil is probably not a good option.

I'd agree that Diesel is not that great. I much prefer my V6 gas I have here.

by the way, guys. Land Cruiser Prado 90 and Land cruiser 70 has 1kzte & 1kztei (intercoller) engines. But, I do not know if it was sold in the US or elsewhere near

I agree with your sentiment, but if you want to split hairs, technically they are different brandings of the similar platform vehicle for different markets. (All *N-185)

Loads of trim differences and option differences between the two too. My '96 has multimode 4x4 and climate control factory fitted which for some weird reason weren't US options until later. (to my knowledge)

You could get right hand drive 4Runners too, (up to 2nd Gen) which were closer to the US LHD 4Runners than the RHS Hilux Surf in terms of trim and spec.

Lots of variants out there. Plenty are in the UK under hilux surfs as well, though the majority came with the 2.4 lump. The KZ is pretty popular too, and then there's the even more rare inter cooled one as well.

I have a Toyota landcruiser colorado (prado) here in florida with the 1KZ engine. Having drove plenty of 3.4 V6's it's night and day difference and the maintenance on these engines are next to nothing.

I believe you can pick up low mileage engines for under 2K, not sure how complete they are though. For 3-4k you can pretty much pick up a complete engine with trans and more importantly the ECU. But in most cases you will just need the KZ bell housing and it will bolt up to your trans fine. The only issue about these imported engines are making sure they're 100% fine and not damaged as parts are hard to come by if you need anything.

It was reliable, I'll give it that. And ran on neat vegetable oil.. which was kind of cool for trolling hippies when I could say my truck was carbon neutral.
