3rd Gen to a 4th Gen....

Guys

I am currently in a 97 2wd with 272k miles on it. I am looking at 2004 4wd, with 205k miles on it. What are some items that I should pay attention to and make sure that has been done? Thank!

Is it a V8 or V6? If it's a V8, the most important thing is to ensure the timing belt has been changed recently.

Also, make sure it goes into 4Hi, 4Lo and that the Center Diff Lock works.
 
Is 205k mileage anything to worry about? Its a different motor than my 3.4, but I know these trucks tend to last forever if you maintain them well.

Just pulled the trigger on an 05 Sport V6 4x4 with 205k miles yesterday and it seems to be decent. I know I'll have to maintenance it right away, but that's pretty much to be expected with any used vehicle. I was lucky and found a one owner vehicle from Texas, so it has NO RUST!! I don't think you should have anything to worry about on a Runner with 205k or more.
 
I'd say go for it! Plus you'll get to learn your vehicle right from the get go doing all of the maintenance!
 
one thing I would keep informed about is the rash of headgaskets problems, particularly in the 04' and some 05 models. theres a big thread in the 4th gen section.

Its up for debate whether it should be a concern, but thats up to you to decide.
