3RD gen towing capacities

I have a 1999 limited V6, I was wondering what kind of trailers some of you guys pull. I am looking to pull a boat trailer with combined weight of 3300 lbs. How do these trucks fair, and with what mods, ie tranny cooler?

I had an '00 V6 SR5 (just sold on Friday night) and I occasionally towed a 3,000+ lb camper and very frequently pulled a 17' fiberglass bass boat with a 120 HP engine. I don't know the weight but it 's lighter than the camper.

The 3.4L is adept at towing but keep right on any hills. She'll usually be able to maintain speed up all but the more severe inclines. I had little problem pulling a heavier boat from PA to Kentucky thru the hills of West Virginia other than pushing her to maintain speed up some of those mountains.

The stock brakes are another matter. Be very careful stopping as the 3rd gen is pretty light and 3300 lbs of dead weight doesn't want to stop well. I found the stock brakes to be below par and upgraded to Brembo rotors (stock rotors suck and warp fast) and Performacnce Friction brake pads (but I'm sure there are other decent combos out there). It helped some.

All-in-all, the 3.4L faired much better than my 2nd gen 3.0L did. Just give yourself plenty of stopping distance.

If you are planning to tow that trailer on a regular basis w/ the 4runner you should look into adding trailer brakes.

my boat trailer has surge brakes that work very well, not worried about stopping. Where do you suggest getting the air bags? I'm from Ontario, Canada, and they are hard to find plus $$$. Thanks for the replies, more welcome!!!

people may ship to canada on ebay.. they are only 50 bucks i think... the air bags go in the coil springs

If you have the cash for it, throw on a supercharger. I had one on mine this summer when I used it to tow a trailer for camping. It worked perfectly! I also added a trans cooler for more protection

w/ the potential problems in the radiator trans cooling setup from the factory on this, you should all ready have a trans cooler!
