The answer is twofold- its not worthless, but hyped... its the same illusion that people that have 4wheel drive think when they are driving in snow... :lookout: that I have something that is better than it actually is.
why do they say with "ATRAC" cuz it sells more cars. So yes, they will hype something like Atrac and convince people it does all these cool things to "sell cars"
Im gonna exaggerate a little here and say ATRAC is like the spoon in the Matrix, it has all these cool features but doesnt exist! at least not the way that people think it does.
So, did Toyota convince you when you bought the 3rd gen that drum brakes or saggy rear ends were "cool" or useful off-road??

every generation has its +'s and -'s, its dumb to try to compare the 2 like its a even playing field. i do like 3rd gens, but id take that 5th gen anyday over yours, i wouldnt really consider the pictured 3rd gen a great example of the body style

ATRAC was installed in the vehicles not for hardcore rock crawlers, but for the weekend wheelers. The one's who need the assistance. Just like DAC, For the people who don't know how to wheel with both feet like they should.

The other thing to consider is that open diffs may result in more damage to the vehicle. Sure, traction devices can put stress on the differential and axles. However, with open diffs, you often have to use momentum to get pass an obstacles. Too much momentum and you lose control of the vehicle or you crash into something unexpected...aka, less control of the vehicle off-road. What was Land Rover's favorite quote: "as slow as you can, as fast as needed" or something like that.

My point with ATRAC is this; if you NEED electronic traction control, you're not wheeling.
Is it good to have? Eh, I'm a little indifferent because I've seen it fail miserably where it should have excelled.
Is it crucial? Absolutely not.
Would I ever use it? Not in a million years.

i would probably be about the only person disagreeing with that statement.
guys...this is as bad as the jeep guys debating on which era of jeep is the best....from willys to CJ's, to YJ's, TJ's, and now JK's. All have different design capabilities and different things that everybody likes. My grandpa wheeled a 47' willys with the original 4 banger in it, and he'd whoop the snot out of a guy with rubicon TJ on 38's.
i can watch my brother in an old 68 jeepster with a buick v6 do the same thing to guys in cherokee's, classic T4r's, and full size truck, and whatever else tossed his way. It all depends on the driver, and how much money you fork out into your project.
Not everyone has 50k to dump into a wheeling rig....my prior offroad project was an 89 2dr XJ that i built in my brothers garage....it sat on 31's with 4.88's and a detroit in the rear....and i still couldnt go places my brother could on an open front diff and a welded rear.
So yes...3rd gen's vs 5th gen's....each has good and bad points....i still love the fact there are 3rd gens everywhere....would i love to get one...hell yes....do i have the cash? nope. But i can definitely find a YJ for about 1000 bucks and for 200 bucks for a springover kit i can stuff 33's under it, and i wont spend cash for a longarm lift like everyone with TJ's or JK's, and i could probably follow them just about anywhere (however it comes to a point where size does matter, literally).
Do i love my 5th gen? definitely. I was happy with my 4th gen. It all depends on what you are die hard about and for. Ultimately, thats all thats gonna matter in the long run...what you are wanting and what you are happy with.

I'm sure all the electronic goodies on the 5th gen will give it an edge and make an average 4wheeler even better but put that same 5th gen in the hands of somebody very experienced and it would really kick ass since driver is a big part of the equation.
I would upgrade my 3rd gen in a heartbeat with a 5th gen TE but right now I am enjoying no car payment but I wouldn't have any qualms about taking it off road with less than a 1000 miles on one.

and TheGreenMonster was right, Toyota didnt market that "saggy coil" feature when they sold the 3rd gen, and when they marketed my 96, they didnt even realize that it was gonna do that. Just like they didnt realize gas pedals would stick on recent cars or that an integrated tranny cooler may be a bad thing, Funny they didnt market any of those "great" selling features!
Im gonna go ahead and go back to my original theory that ATRAC doesnt really exist! :0) it only exists in Thais mind to create chaos and confusion on this board!

He said in the post you quoted that you didnt revive the thread. I doubt he follows your posts, he prolly looks at each section to see if there is a cool topic, and most days we would see your name a lot in some of the catogories, but we haven't seen much of you lately. Your Wife is irrelevant to this conversation, and BTW Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder.

Wow, I just sat here and read this whole post and came away with nothing. I do not off road, I love my 3rd Gen Limited, I do not like the looks of the 5th Gen or 4th for that much. I really read this thread seeing if I could gain some insight on off roading in my 3rd Gen (I was thinking about doing mods to off road) but now.........................to hell with off roading. I will keep mine on road and just personalize my Runner to please me and only me.
I came away from it noting that LINY said that people who know how to wheel will be using both feet, I presume he means left foot braking (LFB). I didn't know that. I do drive AWD Turbo cars and I do LFB and heel/toe when necessary. It's gonna be a little while before I've done all of the maintenance and driving with my "new" 99 4R to be ready to venture off road but I'll DEFINATELY be keeping that in mind.
I live my life between the Subaru and Mistubishi community, love both, have no animosity. And now that I'm finally back in a Toyota I will respect the 5th gen but I'll be loving my jade mica highlander stick shift. BELEEEE DAT!
i believe he was referring to people who have issues wheeling a manual....the whole gas/brake/clutch combo....i.e. wheeling with both feet.
i have an issue with this......i get antsy and scared i'll mix up the combo. i can drive a stick.....i just am not good at wheeling with a stick....not enough practice.
for me wheeling an auto is easier....and less stressfull....which makes it more fun for me.

Well I was actually referring to an automatic transmission, you use both feet for more control.
With a manual you really have no other choice but to use 2 feet...ideally it'd be great to have 3 feet for that! haha
