3rd Gen Yaw Calibration

Hey guys, my 2001 2wd runner is having some issues with the Trac alert going off. I recently replaced the extremely sagging and worn out shocks and springs. However I was having this issue prior to the replacement.

When I go through long sweeping turns around town with any sort of speed, the Trac light goes on with the beeping alarm. It stays on until the vehicle has come back to being straight. I am fairly sure it is they yaw sensor based on what I know about how they work and what they do. I wasn't able to find anything here for the 3rd gens (only 4th and 5th), but did find a older article on Yota Tech, but some of the links are dead.

If i cant find it in the TSB, ill look through Ripcords build. You getting any winter wheeling in with Colin last weekend?

Here ya go BigR. This is the manual procedure.
And just so you know SST 09843 - 18020 is just a jumper wire.


YAW RATE / DECELERATION SENSOR ZERO POINT CALIBRATION

HINT:
- When having replaced the yaw rate sensor, deceleration sensor or the ECU, make sure to perform yaw rate and deceleration sensors zero point calibration.
- This operation is also required when the deceleration sensor or yaw rate sensor has been replaced since the calibrated zero point of both sensors will be erased.

NOTE:
- While obtaining the zero point, do not give any vibration to the vehicle by tilting, moving or shaking it and keep it in a stationary condition. (Do not start the engine.)
- Be sure to do this on a level surface (within an Inclination of 1%).

a. Clear the zero point of the yaw rate and deceleration sensors.
1. Shift the shift lever to P range.
2. Turn the ignition switch ON in a stationary condition.



3. With the ignition switch ON, using SST, repeat a cycle of connect and disconnect between terminals Ts and E1 of DLC1 4 times or more within 8 sec.
Check that the VSC TRAC warning light is lit indicating the recorded zero point is erased.
SST 09843 - 18020

4. Turn the ignition switch OFF.

b. Obtain zero point of the yaw rate sensor.
1. Make terminals Ts and E1 of DLC1 disconnected.
2. Turn the ignition switch ON.

HINT: The vehicle should be in a stationary condition with the shift lever in P range.

3. Check that the lit VSC TRAC warning light goes off about 15 Sec. after the ignition switch is turned ON.

HINT: Even if the ignition switch is not turned OFF in step (a)-(4) and remains ON, the yaw rate sensor zero point calibration can be completed. In this case, the VSC TRAC warning light is lit for about 15 sec. and starts blinking. (Normal code)

4. After ensuring that the VSC warning light remains OFF for 2 sec., turn the ignition switch OFF

HINT: If the ignition switch is not turned OFF in step (a)-4., make sure that the light blinks for 2 sec. and turn the ignition switch OFF.

c. Perform deceleration sensor zero point calibration.

NOTE: After step b. (the yaw rate sensor zero point calibration), the VSC TRAC warning light goes off. At this time, if the vehicle is driven without performing step c. (deceleration sensor zero point calibration), deceleration sensor zero point calibration malfunction will be detected and the VSC warning light will light up.

Therefore, perform step c. right after step b..



1. Using SST, connect terminals Ts and E1 of DLC1.
SST 09843 - 18020
2. Turn the ignition switch ON.

HINT: Make sure that the vehicle is in a stationary condition with the shift lever in P range.

3. After turning the ignition switch ON, check that the VSC TRAC warning light is lit for about 4 sec. and then starts quick blinking at 0.13 sec. intervals.
4. After making sure that the VSC TRAC warning light blinks for 2 sec., turn the ignition switch OFF.
5. Remove SST and make terminals Ts and E1 of DLC1 disconnected.

If you don't want to go through this manually it can be done with several scan tools and calibration tools most alignment shops have within a few minutes as well.

To pick your brain Kyle concerning zero point calibration for 4runner models 2000 and previous that don't have VSC and all the good stuff that come with it; if one switches out the deceleration sensor and/or the ECU, then is the zero calibrating procedure the same? I guess I am too lazy to find a PDF copy of the FSM online at the moment since I am at the airport.

Haha ya it sure is one heck of a "Special Service Tool" I'll have to see if they even sell that glorified paper clip by that number.

Honestly I don't think I'm following your question. Why is it you would need to perform a zero point calibration on a vehicle not equipped with this system?
 
Sorry about that Kyle. The Atlanta airport resembled nothing less than a zoo when I was there earlier. Lucidness was not with me at that time.

I guess my question was concerning all pre 2001 4runners who don't have the VSC but do have a deceleration sensor (my 99 Limited does), would anything have to be done to the ABS system (recalibrate it per se or just plug and play) if the sensor was removed or failed? Just curious more than anything else since my FSM is back home.

kind of off topic... but I was wondering, Brian, whether you have the Tundra brakes with 231mm 13WL calipers on your 4Runner?

Hi BigRogers I realize your post is soeveral years old but I've search I believe almost every thread on yaw sensor & the intermittent problem where the skid indicator light goes on & the abs kicks off when I take a u turn or a wide sweeping turn. I bought this truck about 2 months ago had 153000 miles & shot shocks / frt coil springs so I installed new OME 881 frt & 890 rears with 90004 & 600026 shocks. Now like your truck the problem was there before the lift install so I just waited after the installation to do the zero point calibration. I followed the instructions to the letter and really didn't see any improvement the 1st try. So I waited till I did my tundra brake upgrade thinking it maybe a stuck caliper but no joy. I did find the left rear brake was adjusted to the point the wheel wouldn't rotate by hand freely so I backed off the rear brakes. The rear brake adjustment helped a little but with u turns the problem persist while taking turns the number of incidents has lessen. I'm looking at changing the gas cap because the previous owner replaced it with an auto zone unit that is easily removed as compared to OEM. Now the reason the cap was replaced because they had a CEL the dealer said it was the gas cap & O2 sensor they also replaced the battery a yr ago. Anyhow I'm now grasping for straws, I ordered a OBD II scanner but its not due in for a week & I don't have any any idiot lights.
Any advise or if you found the fix is appreciated

Hey man....sorry for the late reply, only get on the forum every-once-in-a-while these days. For what it is worth I followed the listed steps above and from what I can recall it did the trick. I also recall it took me a couple of tries to get it right, going back reading, redoing, re-reading and redoing. Finally it worked.

If you have tried and tried again and haven't gotten any better results I would recommend the Andy Mod 2.0 found here on T4R. It will disable the audible issue, and i believe resets itself once the vehicle is turned off and turned back on. If not that take it to a Toyota service mechanic or the stealer-ship and see if they can be of assistance.

Sorry i cant be of much more help than that. I hated not having something meet factory specs, and having better equipment made the issue happen. It all has to do with balance and position of the vehicle. Also make sure the suspension you have currently is not to soft, the extra body roll will activate the sensor.

Let me know what you end up doing.

I too was having the same issue with the trac light coming on and the beep when making a sharp turn. Long story short, I ended up performing the deceleration and yaw sensor calibration but the results was not what I was expecting. All three lights (abs, vsc trac, vsc off) are now on and I can't figure out how to get them off. I've now tried the calibration at least 5 times with the same results.

Note: So the vsc light flashes in intervals and the ABS light flashes rapidly at the same time with calibrating the yaw sensor.

Please help....

The flashing VSC light is telling you what code is stored in the computer. If you have an ODB scanner you can hook it up and see what fault codes are stored in the computer and clear them and see if the problem returns. If you don't have a scanner, you can bust out the factory service manual and get to the section that tells you how to decode the flashing lights based on the sequencing of the flashes.
 
To anyone that has followed the manual recalibration procedure with success, did you sit in the vehicle while performing the steps? I'm 235 lbs, I'm seriously wondering if my body weight could be enough to keep the recalibration from occurring?
 
No, I just rolled the driver side window down & reached in to turn the key on & off.

Thanks. I printed off the instructions from here and tried 3 times today. I would get as far as getting the "confirmation" from the VSC light that everything was reset, but as soon as I start the runner, the VSC `and TRAC light come right back on. I'm at a loss.
 
The more I dig into old threads the more problems I find to fix on my T4R! Ha. Here I’ve been driving around for 4 years just thinking my VSC was a little sensitive, kicking on taking tight turns, hard accelerations into traffic (which is kind of scary when you lose power to your wheels and there’s a car coming up behind you at 55-65 mph)...I’ll be knocking this calibration out later today!
