3rd Generation Compartment in Trunk

On the right side of my newly bought 2000 4runner, theres a little compartment you can open if you twist the nobs on the door. It came with like 2 straps but was empty. Whats this for? Just anything like storage or is it acutally used for something?

I think Toyota offered at one time a first aid kit or some flares that fit in there with the straps. I use mine to hold my battery cables.

Here in the US it is empty. In other parts of the world it is for a Box of Reflective Triangles in case you break down. People here on the forum use it for a variety of things, including a sub-woofer.

I use it to store a few flares I bought. I also hold some car care products like the meguiars carpet cleaner and dash cleaner as well as a microfriber towel. I also hold some towing straps just in case.

compartment can actually hold a lot as you can see.

Same here, jumper cables and a small first aid kit.

I bought a 1st aid road assistance kit from Costco; flash light, triangle, jumper cables, air compressor, blanket, 1st aid kit, and bunch of other stuff I never hope to use. About half of it fit in there, the other half is under the driver's seat. Also put in a foldable cloth "cooler", cause you never know when you might need to keep that six-pack cold.

What bugs me is that the cover for that compartment is sort of loose, it closes fine, the twist latches turn fine, but then the whole thing (especially the front part) dips down a little. Maybe something was there before my times and pushed it out so now it doesn't stay closed perfectly...

i bought the car with the same stuff already in there, but couldn't stand the noise every speed pump or pot hole. plus i have never towed a trailer, so not like that was coming up any time soon...

are you talking about the cargo area? i kept my jumper cable and a showering towel. just in case if i need it. i also keep a small first aid kit in my passenger back pocket, and 2 glowsticks on the driver's side door for emergency. and of course a flashlight under my seat. i'm ready for action! :p
