Hey Dudes,
[MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] and I have another video for you. We helped member [MENTION=148218]JZiggy[/MENTION] with a Rear Axle Seal job, and as part of that job, we replaced his 3rd Member with a limited Slip 3rd Member he got from a dude that does good work.

So, if you ever wanted to know how to remove and replace your 3rd member or how to pull your rear axles, here's a video for you.

We'll, I'm hoping Jordan will chime in with an answer for you. He knows the guy who rebuilds the 3rd members so he probaly got some type of advice from the guy on how to drive it after swapping it out.

Check out the dude Zuk's website. If you want to know more about it, either Jordan is going to have to chime in or you can email Zuk and ask him the information you'd like to know. I don't know shit about how he rebuilds them and what he replaces. But, Jordan [MENTION=148218]JZiggy[/MENTION] highly recommends him so he must do good work.

Zuk is the be-all end-all authority on Toyota differentials. Plus, he's super friendly and helpful. You can spend hours reading his website and learn more than most factory trained Toyota techs know.

Timmy - thanks for posting. I will be installing ARB RD132 in April ( with assistance from a friend), and this video will be really helful.

Are you actually tearing apart your 3rd member and installing the ARB locker or are you just going to pull the 3rd member, have a shop install the locker and then you'll put it back in? I've watched videos of installing an ARB and it looks fairly involved.
 
I just took apart my 3rd member not to long ago. And replaced the bearings. If you have a elocker. Make sure it's unlocked. And if the OEM gasket is fried. And you cannot pull the member of. Use a air hammer to prie it open. When I put it back. I used Toyota red silicone to seal it rather then the gasket.

I will be taking my current 3rd member apart and installing the ARB locker. My friend has installed arb lockers in several rigs and has all the right tools. I saw a few youtube videos and understand the process but would not attempt installing it myself. I did consider buying a new 3rd member w/ ARB locker from ECG . The cost was about $1600 not including air compressor. My friend will install it for free ( he did ask me to buy beers). I paid $950 for rd 132 and arb compressor.

I am thinking of buying Motive brake bleeder, which will help with bleeding brakes. Although my axle seals are not leaking, I am thinking of replacing them as well since the axles will be out.

Would you consider recording the ARB install. I'd love to see how your friend does it.

Hey guys,

The limited slip diff is a Detroit TrueTrac. I've had good success with them in other vehicles though you will read mixed reviews. In my opinion they are a good compromise that gives excellent street manners and better tractions in ALL situations, except for lifting a wheel in high camber situations. If I'm honest with myself, I do a whole lot more dirt road, snow, slippery type stuff than rock crawling so it is a good setup for me.

@Zuk did a fantastic install (as always) and did a neat writeup on the 3rd member setup here: Gear Install Toyota

Since I had new bearings but used gears I just did a simple drain/fill with el cheapo 80W90 after 50 miles and after 500 miles. Both cases only showed a teensy bit of stuff on the drain magnet. I then filled with Redline 75W140NS. The TrueTrac works better without friction modifier. The Redline "NS" gear lubes are made without FM.

Big thanks again to Tim and Sean for the awesome help on this project!

I would recommend contacting Zuk directly about his prices. In my case I bought a used third member from him and used gears, and was able to offset my cost by selling my old differential, which was still in really good shape.

very interesting, I would like a locker, but this might suit my needs better esp for the $$.
In the olden days, limited slip was what you wanted in mud and snow and I have had chebys and bmw's with limited slip and they were great

no wires, no compressors no switches, just there when you need it

The ending goes: Hagrid got frustrated with how we were trying to finagle the transaxle back in, so he rolled the 150lb unit onto his chest and just pushed it up in there. "Quick, grab a bolt!"
