3rd Row Removal Down The Line?

Im still transporting kids all over the place and getting closer to a purchase however, I dont want the third row and my kids do. So I'm curious what do you think the cost (if possible at all) would be to remove the third row seat option down the line and make new like the option was not there? Im aware lots of plastic and such would need to be exchanged and Im just hoping someone can throw a dart at the potential costs.

I was told by my dealer that you can remove it and it would cost a couple of hundred bucks to do so.

Yes removing it does not appear to be that hard, (could be wrong on my end) its the cost of replacing the floor/carpet and a fair amount of plastic. Thanks for your response.

Maybe there is some program change Toyota can make or would it hurt to leave it alone??? I talked with one service guy and he was not helpful one bit. I will try more Monday.

No doubt! They want me to transport thier friends to the lakes in the summer and snow in the winter. Its hard to say no as "most" of thier friends folks all drive those monster suburbans, Tahoes ect and have been very gracious for many years but I dont want to drive one of those things. Im destin to see if this is doable with this truck.

And a BIG no on the van...

It sounds like you will make good use of a 3rd row. I don't see the big trepidation if you are going to use it, and for your family, nonetheless.

I think the dealer is BS'ing about cost and ease of conversion. Why convert, is there a significant reason?

I would like to remove it down the road only to gain every bit of cargo space as possible. Lots of gear and I would like to keep it in the back of the truck vs. the roof mounted Yakima case like I do now. The third row takes up a fair amount of much needed cargo space.

With the seats up, the cargo space loss is pretty significant. W/ the seats down, I'd say it is relatively small. You are really losing ~4" of height. I don't know what sort of gear you are looking to keep back there, but I would say that 95% of the time, the higher load floor isn't going to be noticed.

I think the difference between no tray and 3rd row is like 6", tray and 3rd row is like 4". That is how it looks in photos, IMO.

I was looking into removing the sliding tray in my TE for a while. The only parts that needed to be replaced where the carpet and the foam under te carpet. Around $500 MSRP if I remember correctly. That may be the same parts you would need to replace. You could always try to sell your stuff and recoup some of that cost.

Thanks for the input Ryan. Im going to try and get two, one with and one with out the 3rd row side by side and review the visual side of it. The rear corners were the 3rd row seat belts are may get pricy-who knows... For that matter alot of the trim may by super expensive.

Was going to just leave it alone but now Im really curious as to the cost!

Chopsticks - I got the 3rd row for the exact same reason & have thought about getting rid of it a few years down the road when the kids are too big to fit. From what I can see in the repair manual it doesn't appear to be that difficult to do.

I thought about making a custom "tray" of some sort just to serve as a floor for the back & use the space underneath for storage of items I don't want sliding around (jumper cables, trailer hitch, misc stuff). My CR-V had a space under the picnic table tray in the back for that purpose & I loved it. Can't imagine it would be that difficult to do.

SeattleMike - out of curiosity, why would you need to do anything with the airbags? Would they pose a hazard or other issue with the 3rd row removed? (I say that under the assumption that the 3rd row seats don't have any sensors or airbag connectors in them).

Well I was hoping I could gain the floor space however it looks like the third row trucks have a part of the body (metal) reinforcing the rear portion of the third row unlike a non third row truck. Look at both sides of the plastic raised piece near the hatch gasket and then both sides, you can see the sheet metal.

In this picture the truck has the slide tray option however you can see the difference in the sheet metal.


Looks like one 'ArticEd" could make some storage space down there. I wanted to try and obtain "max" height but looks like that plan is out. Bummer...
