Because there is a very limited market for a TE with three rows. Maybe a dozen.

My wife wanted the limited seats (cooled, heated, memory, third row) if Toyota offered the creature comforts of the limited with the trail package. We would have bought it. Sorta like a mini-LC for half the price.

Because the market is so small to even offer it as an option. You don't offer options that won't sell. Sure you and a few others but you need a few more than that.

I was disappointed to find out the trail wasn't offered with a third row as well. That was what I wanted. I had to get an SR5 because I need the third row for the kids.

I'd like to have a TRD Pro with something like Honda Lanewatch. I think the new Rav4 has it. Birds eye view, cameras all around the vehicle displayed on the infotainment.

Get an Sr5 premium or Limited based on options preferences and then add an aftermarket rear locker.

We just looked at an SR5 with the third row today and my impression is that the passengers in the 3rd row have their heads right up almost against the back windshield. Having been rear ended multiple times when I'm stopped at a light, I worry about the safety of the 3rd row passengers. Anyone else with that thought?

I guess the question is are the mounting points in the floor on a trail. Anybody ever have their carpet out yet? I'm sure some 3rd row seats will come up on e bay at some point. I think the new LC has cameras for approach and other outside cameras displayed on monitor. Maybe we will see a carryover for the 4runner trail in the future. (Cross fingers)

I'm about to remove the (near useless) 3rd row in my Limited. The problem with fitting a 3rd row into a Trail would be seatbelts and airbags.
