3rd transmission needed

Hi all, my 98 RWD Limited needs another transmission, it's third in the life of the vehicle (242,285 miles). While I'm willing to pay the price to have it repaired, I'm wondering what other significant repairs lie ahead of me with this vehicle? Anything in particular that I should keep a lookout for? I do continue the regular maintenance schedule as best as possible. Thanks!

3rd transmission??? Sorry, it sounds like you got a lemon and I didn't even know there was such as thing as a lemon 4Runner. Normally just consistent fluid changes will keep these transmissions happy for a long time. Although, my rig is on transmission #2 due to the previous owner never changing the fluid and cooked it.

Suspension (coils and shocks) & steering (lower ball joints, tie rods, sway bar end links) will start to go out soon if it's all original parts. The engine if taken care of should last you for many more years though.
 
Thank you for your reply. I'm probably the lemon in this situation. Looking back, there were some tell-tale symptoms and I should have been proactive in identifying the issue and taking care of it. How often should the transmission fluid be changed?

I had a shifter solenoid go out (150k miles) and I doubt the PO changed the fluid. when I did, it washed everything out and it everntually killed itself. I bought another trans with 100k more miles for $200 and it's been a champ.
 
damn..thats bad..i have 99 limited 4wd 280k..all original...i did the partial tranny fluid way...you know at the radiator..get out 2 quarts..then replace two quarts method...did maybe 2 gallons..that really sucks to have to acquire another transmission.
 
What exactly is wrong with it? I'd see if I couldn't find a low mileage used one for cheap.

The only thing that hurts when fluids are changed often is one's wallet.
 
Was transmission number 2 a rebuilt, and if so, was it an OEM toyota rebuilt?

I'd definitely consider swapping in a used tranny over forking over another 2 grand plus for a rebuilt, especially since they seem to never last (except for maybe a Toyota rebuilt one).

And yeah, what's wrong with your current one?
 
I feel your pain. I'll most likely be installing the 3rd transmission in my 01, and I only have 190k on it.
 
Still holding out hope on my original that had a pink milkshake. But I bought a low mileage tranny and transfer case together for a really good price so I have my backup ready to go

The torque converter disintegrated and discharged FOD throughout the transmission. The fluid was burnt to a crisp. Again, user error.

The original owner had transmission number 1 replaced at a dealership with a re-manufactured Toyota transmission at 136,657 miles.

The torque converter disintegrated and the transmission fluid was burnt. The last transmission fluid change was about 4 years/22,575 miles ago. Is that odd?
 
Not fun. I would guess, and that is what it is, that the first transmission may have had the milkshake, it was replaced but possibly not the torque converter, which killed off transmission #2. For a dealer not to replace the TC is unthinkable, unless it was a no-go by the owner.

I see many more used A340Es (2wd) for sale than A340Fs for 4wd so you should be able to find one. I'd pull the pan if used, change the filter, get a new TC, install and flush with Castrol Import ATF (4 gallons). Maybe even add an extrernal cooler.

First one was cause the Pink Milkshake, and the current one is unknown. I was just driving around one day, and had a massive clunk going into 4th. Now it's making a surging sound as it starts to shift into 4th. When it goes out I'll find another, and swap it over in a weekend.

It's actually not that bad of job if you do it yourself. I though the worse part was pulling apart the interior on the last one I did.
 
I thought the hardest part was getting the transmission hard lines hooked back up, it was a total PITA.

If I had to do it again, I'd remove the rubber lines up by the radiator and just snake them back instead.

It's more time consuming than anything...
 
I have one that needs to be rebuilt most likely that you can flat out have :) Came out of a 97' 4Runner with 251,000
