3VZ-E threw rod. Now what!?!?!

So the title sums it up. Shop says $5000 to replace it. Not sure what they want to charge for a rebuild, but I would want to do the rebuild myself if that's the route I want to take. I'm thinking about a 3.4 swap, but I am broke. Any thoughts?

Search Craigslist, I bet you can find a totaled one with a good engine for a few hundred... If you're okay swapping for a 22RE, those are very, very easy to find.

$5000 is way too much,they are ripping you off.You can buy a used healthy one from the below junk yards for only $250-500 and have them install it for $250-500 so no more than $1000.The 3VZE is used in about 65% or so of the 1988-95 4-Runners and pickups.

The $5k was including labor, but still, I think you're right, it is too much. I'm just so bummed, it feels like someone just chopped my arm off.

In life always get a second and third opinion, with the price of metals being the highest ever,you could get at least $20 or so just for the block and the rest of the good parts you could sell on Ebay,Craigslist or such.

had mine replaced from the JY with a "newer" 3vze two years ago. the only trouble leaky vale covers. engine swap, $2100, 6 month warranty.

oh man that sucks so much. x2 on graigslist. find a busted ass 3vze and peice out the engine, or just hit a boneyard and scavenge, but beware of rusty cranks (if you are replacing) how badly scratched is your block? you could just over bore out the scratches, and check out somew new pistons for LCE. but if all you neeed is a new con rod, LCE would have that and basically any engine component for the 3vze. or the 3.4 swap would work just fine, i have a lot of info on it if you need any, just PM me.....
