Got a 93 for free with a blown head gasket.

Just finished getting it all back together. Tried to take it for a run around the block and the temp gage was pegged before Before I got 300 yards down the road.

Can some one give me a list of things to start checking?

Thanks,

It may be a stupid question, but did you bleed the cooling system? and you added water to antifreeze? not sure of your knowledge and don't mean to sound insulting in anyway. also there may have been bearing damage to the motor if it was run for an extended period of time with a bad head gasket.

No insult taken. That's why these forums exist.

I did not bleed the cooling system. How is that done? I added about 5 quarts of Toyota red coolant and the rest water.

The guy I got the car from says it was not driven at all once the head gasket blew.

Accually, I got it worked out now. After it got hot on me the first time, I topped off the coolant and replaced the fan clutch because it seem really loose even after it was hot. Fan clutch could be why it blew the head gasket in the first place.

It is running normal temp now. I also topped the coolant off a second time.

Now the issue is there is no power. I know these motors do not have alot of power stock, but it is very hard getting it up to 60 on flat ground. I checked the timing and it is fine. Valves are in spec. I was thinking maybe MAF?

The power issue could be cam timing. The belt could be off a tooth on one side. Might want to check to see if they are still aligned correct.

I had double checked the timing before I finished putting the rest of everything together.

I will Check it again just to make sure. I just put cylinder #1 at TDC with the timing mark at 0 deg and the arrows on the cam pulleys should both be at the marks, correct?

There is air in the system....after changing the head gaskets you need to elevate the front end of the truck with the motor running so the system can work the air out...easiest way for me...works great everytime.

replaced heads, water pump, belts, condenser, radiator, stat (oem) and it still overheats. I raised the front end and tried to bleed the air. Its fine at idle with heat. overheats under a load. Used block tester today and die stayed blue. I may not have bled the system enough and may still have air. I have tried everything i know and need your help.

generally speaking the Toyota motors are not hard to (bleed), it really is not like jeeps and cars that you hear about. The whole raise the front of the car is funny(not making fun of anyone or their idea) never seen that before, and yes I have done some 3.0, 2.4, 2.7 head gaskets.
Start with basic's Invater you have done the head gaskets so for now you know that you are good there. Look at your water pump working like it needs to? Is the radiator plugged? Is your stat good? Are you getting air leaks into the cooling system? Is the radiator cap working properly? Is the fan working properly? Is there a clog in the motor? Is your temp gauge reading properly? And lastly if you have covered all the bases and you still cant seem to figure it out then start looking back at were the heads milled right? Did something happen to the head gasket? See were all that gets you.
