3vze stumbles aleast once a day Help

Hi. I'm new to the forum. I just purchased a 1994 4runner with 155000 miles for 2,000 . She is in great shape. Just a little cancer on the passenger rear fender. I have a issue that is intermittent . The engine stumbles for split second and the trucks rpm drop 200 to 500 rpm and the cel light flashes.then everything returns to normal. This happens in morning after engine is warm and usually on the highly around 60 to70 mph. I checked to see if there were any loose grounds and found that a ground wire on the fender next to the battery was broken.I replaced the wire thinking maybe this had something to do with it. It did it again this morning. I checked for codes and found nothing. I see that a lot of people have this issue, but I can't seem to find anyone who fixed the problem. Can someone direct me in the right direction ?

sorry dude, wish i could be more help

my only guess is the ecu... do you have an automatic or manual? does she do it when in idle , only in gear, or both?
i'm also new here, and so far have received no replies to my questions(1week+) so i feel yer pain there

i think the reason you have no replies.. nobody's got the symptom info to put there 2 cents in (cant blame them) this could be a VAST number of issues.

do some tests.. we need a little more info than "it hesitates"

try gunning it from a stop all the way to 65, notice anything weird? and hiccups? what rpm, duration and severity?

now try genitally accelerating to 65, observe and report any hiccups, noises, ect

how often does it happen, intermittent or consistent?

play with it, can you intentionally cause it to stumble?

get a few observations and we'll figure this one out :)

It at first only happened when I was in drive at highway speeds. Just the other day I started it and it stalled few minutes later. It. Started up without a hitch. I checked for codes and I found nothing . I think the ecu loses power for split second and nothing is recorded. It's automatic so I'm lost. It starting to bum me out. Your help would be appreciated.

no info, but good wishes to your rig. Hope you get it figured out, I dont like being bummed on my truck either (still am with some cab leaks)
have you posted at ttora.com and yt (as$hole land) as well?

I did post on yotatech, but to no avail . It stalled this morning. I drove to end of my street ,stopped and put it in park and she quietly shut off . I haven't checked for a code . But I doubt there is one. How do I check for a code again ? I know i need a wire or paperclip. She started right with no problem. This issue is a intermittent thing. Sometimes it happens in park and sometimes while driving . Only stalls in park. I just got the egr replaced. Where do I start ? Thanks again

I was just probing under the hood and i notice that EFI relay is all busted up and the cap comes off the top of the relay. Could this be the problem? Should I replace the relay? If so where can I get one ? Autozone?

Well she stalled on me at light. No warning just went off quietly .now I'm concerned. Debating if I should take it to Toyota stealership. Help where do I begin ,and what tool do I need?

I'd check how much the stealerships charge per hour and then check a local mechanic, see if there is much difference. I would probably try a stealership next time if I had an issue like that. Back when I was having hesitation problems I took it to 3 different "recommended" mechanics and none could figure it out. They just kept throwing parts at me. Oxygen sensors, other expensive parts...etc etc. I spent a fair bit and the only thing their "diagnostics" came up with was some kinda fuel issue. They wanted to throw more parts at it but I was sick of spending money on something that would go away after the engine was fully warmed up (10 mins or so).

Mines purely a cold weather issue so its gonna probably start happening again here soon. Its whether or not I want to spend the cash or just take it easy for the first 10 mins before it warms up.

You issue sounds different, but you could try a mechanic or stealership, Im sure they can hook up a whole heap of sensors and let you know whats going on right at the point when it stalls, see what they say, and replace the parts in your own time.

If it takes them 2 hours @ $80 and hour thats not too bad. Might give you something to go by.

Or you could just start replacing parts willy nilly and hope you get the right one. 8) Have you done rotor, cap, leads plugs, fuel filter?

I just bought the truck about 3 weeks ago.I haven't changed anything. I did an oil change with a seafoam treatment ,and before you say seafoam is the cause,I had the issue before the seafoam treatment. Also new air filter . That's it.

Well id start with those things first. Basic tune up, might find it will fix the issue.

Was under the hood yesterday and decided to check the connections with the spark plug wires. Drove today and it didn't stumble or lose power. It didn't stall either. We shall see the rest of the week .

i had a loose battery connection at 1st - when the vibration of the truck running got to a certain point, then no electrical and no power. look there too ?

I did check the battery and found the battery ground to the inside fender was snapped, however I'm still having this issue . I have noticed now that the screw that goes into the inside fender is stripped and the connection is loose. I don't believe that's the issue. The power doesn't cut out the radio and lights don't blink when it happens .there is small jolt and rpm drop maybe 500 rpmand CEL flash quick and that's it. Everything goes back to normal. It has me stumped. Can someone explain how to get the codes if there is any using a paperclip ?

Mike

I was wondering if maybe a new fuel filter may fix the issue? Where exactly is the filter located on 94 runner ? I will replacing the cap, rotor and spark and wires as well as the coil.

Its under the front passenger door. Bolted to the frame rail. Bit of a PITA to get too and to get off though but a pretty simple job. If I can do it and do it successfully, then its an easy fix. :P

Well checking the vacuum lines to egr,I found one hose was cut . I also fixed the loss connection at the fender. So far no issues with stumble . I failed inspection today because of an exhaust leak. So just going to have to install a new exhaust with a high flow cat and series 40 flowmaster or magna flow muffler . Which is better?
