4.0 valve adjustment needed?

For you guys that are Toyota techs or those that have experience doing a valve adjustment on the 4.0, how necessary is that process? The reason I ask is that I am getting some clatter from both sides of the engine that does not go away no matter what rpm the engine is at. Currently the engine has just over 117k miles and the maintenance manual mentions checking the valve clearance at 120k miles. Normally I would do something like this myself, but I really don't have the time to put into it right now.

Here is a short video I captured.

Just for giggles I called one of the local Toyota dealers here in KC and they claim they have never done this procedure. How much should I expect to pay for this service, if in fact it is needed? What say you?

I'm only listening to your video on my phone, so that makes it hard to compare... but doesn't sound too much different than mine. I have 145k on my 08. I did some searches when my mileage approached to valve adjustment interval. There was consensus that the 1GR-FE is a rather noisy engine to begin with. I also read that the valvetrain design tends to be very robust, where the few who tore into them found they were still well in spec. Hopefully someone with experience with this will chime in.

A couple other sites mention very little wear issues.

Just for reference...

When my head gaskets were replaced at 135kish the valve clearance was still within spec. They just cleaned the heads. They didn't swap out any of the shims or buckets.

It was significantly more quiet afterwards but I attribute that to the new intake and exhaust manifold gaskets.

Fair enough. Is there anything that I can add to the crankcase that will help quiet things down a bit? Seafoam, etc? The local dealer that I talked to mentioned a product called Valve Medic.

Personally, I wouldn't add anything. Most of it is snake oil and could mess something up. The 4.0 is just a noisy engine.

Oh I forgot, when I was looking for more info on the valve adjustment, I founf a thread on the FJC forum where a guy was able to isolate an emission valve that bolts to the engine, and apparently contributes to the noise. He said it helped. I'll try to link the thread in a little while... Gotta run and take the girlies to dance class... :)

I'm pretty sure there was a thread on this forum about that valve as well. Just haven't had the time to get some parts and try it yet.
