4.0L V6 Durability

As a new owner of a V6 4Runner, I am wondering what the verdict is on the 4.0L engine, or is it too early to tell for sure? I believe it is Toyota's first attempt at an all-aluminum truck engine.

I have personally experienced the durability and reliability of other Toyota engines, and members here who are lucky enough to own the stellar 4.7L V8 have a long track record of dependability to comfort them.

Are there any members here who have racked up a lot of mileage on the 4.0L V6? If so, what has been your experience with the engine's reliability and durability?

My fingers are crossed, and I hope the 1GR-FE turns out to be as good as most other Toyota motors (no sludge, please!).

You are right, this is Toyota's first attempt at an all aluminum truck engine. I've had mine since September of 2003 and with 46,000 miles, it still runs like new.

Only 10,000 miles on my '05 with the V-6, so I am not exactly 'high-mileage' by any means. That aside, it is a Toyota and should have good reliability whether it is aluminum or iron.

Isuzu has made aluminum diesel truck engines (like the Duramax used in Chevy/GMC trucks) for years and they have a good track record. If Isuzu can do it, I reckon Toyota can too!
:awais:

Only time will tell how reliable the 1GRFE engine really is. I'm at 25K+ with my 2004. I'm putting my faith in Toyota...

Almost 2.5 years, so far so good.

Nearly 33,000 miles, and have had ZERO issues with anything drivetrain related (engine, transmission, driveshafts, differentials, 4wd system).. Only real glitches have been the brakes and the rattles (sunroof related for the most part).

Off topic but: my roof rattle went away! I am sure when I hit the right bump/pot hole it will jar whatever was making noise and come back to haunt me. It rattled for two years and then this summer it went away??

Save for the occasional (statistically insignificant) HG failure (I don't believe it is wide problem as in past generations for Toyota's 3.0 and 3.4 V6s). This engine is BULLETPROOF.

It is still being used in today's 4Runner, so there's that. Old tech rules

You can keep your turbo/direct injection/StopStart/Hybrid crap................

Again, having that said, the next powerplant WILL incorporate some/all of these technologies.

I've just turned 234,000 on my 2006 v6 limited 4x4.

No engine trouble while I have owned it (purchased it with 126,000) and 6 years ago.

I change the oil every 5k miles and keep a close eye on everything.

Should get at least 300k if not 400k out of this engine without much trouble I would think.
