4:10 to 4:30 gears & eLocker

Hi gang,

Quick question. I currently have 4:10 gearing ('98 5spd manual). I'm planning on installing a '99 oem elocker w/ 4:30 gears. The front diff is still 4:10 gearing. Will i do any harm driving it around despite the mismatch in gears?

I believe as long as i keep it out of 4wd, i should be fine but I just wanted to double check. I already have a new eaton elocker w/ 4:30 gearing that will probably go in shortly after the rear diff is in, but definitely not the same day.

Thanks!

Won't be any problem at all in 2WD.

Also, FWIW, I inadvertently did that for about 4 months. I have a factory e-locker manual, and just 'knew' it had a 4.30 elocker diff on it, because 4Runners with elockers are always 4.30. Well... almost all 4Runners are automatics, probably even more of the elocker equipped ones are qutomatics, the manual elockers are fairly rare, anyhow, apparently the factory put 4.10 gearing on a manual elocker. So when I replaced my rear diff with one from a Limited (auto trans) I had a 4.10 front and a 4.30 rear. And it actually worked quite well, so well that it really did take me a while to suspect something was up and check. But you're not supposed to use 4WD unless you're on a soft surface, and there, the small difference in gearing didn't seem to make much of a difference. And it actually turned better in tight corners where 4WD would normally push, since the fronts were going a tiny bit faster and would help pull the front end around (a micro-dig? lol). No real binding, but it would rarely unlock without reversing a little, up from needing to do that some of the time to almost all the time. Finally thought to check (jacked up front and rear on one side, 4WD engaged, turned the wheels) and surprise, it's 4.1 on the front. So I just got another 4.3 front diff since those are far easier to find than 4.10 rear lockers.

Like JohnMC said, it won't be a problem in 2wd. It won't really be a problem on low traction surfaces in 4wd either. 4.10 and 4.30 ratio are very close to each other so it won't be a huge difference offroad between front and rear.

Tacoma pre-runners with the locker are 4:10 - the housing is wrong, but the 3rd member is right!

I've heard that. I've still never seen a 4.10 locker in the junkyards around here. Lockers themselves are rare enough, 98% of the time you find one it's on a Limited 4Runner and is 4.30.

One time we did find a Taco that had a locker, might even have been a PreRunner, can't recall, but someone had written 'The locker's already gone!!!' on the fender with a sharpie. Lockers disappear *FAST*.
