4,500 Mile Road Trip in my '14 TEP

Hey all,

This doesn't reach epic road trip status, but I wanted to share some pictures and articulate how well my T4R performed on a long road trip with some grueling legs of driving.

Around August of last year, my friend told me about something called the Grizzly Double Dare: there's a half marathon in Grand Teton National Park on the first Saturday in June, then one in Yellowstone the following Saturday. If you do both, you've conquered the Grizzly Double. He'd never run a half marathon, and I had resolved to head west again in 2016 after a cross-country road trip through Moab and the rest of UT on the way to Cruiserfest in my buddy's 80 series last September. We were sold.

We decided to drive for various reasons: flights into the area are really expensive, renting a car is expensive (especially an SUV), we needed to bring a ton of stuff for varying temperatures/running/hiking/camping/etc., and of course...the appeal of getting to drive my own truck through WY, ID, MT and two of the best national parks in the country. I decided it was worth it, despite the wear and tear on my truck and tires.

The only really grueling part was that we didn't take our time getting out there or coming back. We drove 33 hours getting to Jackson, WY with only two drivers alternating through the night. Same deal getting back from West Yellowstone, MT but it took 36 hours and we were understandably exhausted, having pushed ourselves running and hiking all week. We finished the Yellowstone Half around 9:30 on Saturday and were on the road by 1pm. Ouch.

The 4Runner performed awesomely! So much room for our stuff, comfortable ride (even with heavy tires, bumper, etc.), best gas mileage I've ever gotten (mostly due to driving 45mph so often), and just that feeling of security from being in a super capable Toyota.

No reason to get into too much detail about what we did, but I want to point out that thanks to some other threads on here I did hit up this 4X4 recommended road in Grand Teton with some pretty cool views. It was fun, bumpy, not technical, and mostly just provided an off-the-beaten-path way to view wildlife and take in the magnificent scenery. It was the Bar BC Rd, also called River Rd, also called Cottonwood Creek Rd. Many thanks to MTgirl for the advice in another thread.

Obviously I took a million photos, but I'll just post the 4Runner related ones. My truck in scenic places, bug massacre on the front bumper, other cool Toyotas and a LR Defender that was pretty awesome, and a screenshot of our track from the 4X4 road in Grand Teton on Gaia.

All in all, it was an unforgettable trip and I am sure that long road trips in the 4Runner are going to become at least an annual thing.

Awesome! Looks like a great trip. I'll keep an eye out for you around Atlanta. I'm up in Roswell but am down in the city often. Truck looks good.

I like how your tires fill out your wheel wells. I see that you put on the max without a lift and not rub.

I thinking going with the same size, not decided on brand yet.

Thanks! Cool - I'm on the Atlanta 4Runners Facebook group and try to make it to the meets sometimes.

Thank you! Correct, no rub on 275s with stock suspension (and extra weight on the front). I highly recommend the ST Maxx!

That looks like an awesome trip! What size tires are you on? And what kinda gas mileage were you averaging?

See above for tire size. As far as mpg, I don't rack it religiously but I feel like around Atlanta I get between 14 and 14.5. When I fill up my tank, the miles to empty often shows around 290 so that checks out.

I wasn't doing math when we filled up, but when I had a full tank out there the miles to empty was showing 310-330, which seems crazy, but I'm pretty sure it updates based on actual mpg and I went through enough tanks of gas that it would definitely reflect recent driving habits.

I guess driving a rather consistent 45mph really is THAT much more efficient than stop and go traffic or flying at 75+!?

Oh sweet! I didn't see that on my phone, thanks!

So probably more 16-17, that's pretty good! I have 275/75/18 and I usually get around 14.5 in the city, when I'm towing it goes down to 9.5-10

Lol, not wanting to turn this into yet another MPG thread, but the tire size/type really pull the MPG down that much? Or is it just your driving style?

In constant DC traffic, I show 330 miles to go, and on my I-95 drives it shows 390-400 miles to empty.

I know a little bigger, weight, and aggressive tread will pull it down, but it seems a bit more than what I expected.

Awesome trip and the Tetons look incredible. I would love to see pictures of more than just the truck as Yellowstone and the Tetons are gorgeous!

Makes me super pumped for our trip in September as we will be hitting both parks for a week

When I was on stock tires, I would see around 19mpg average, when I went to the 275/75/18 it's usually about 14.5-15 on average now. Tires have a huge play in gas mileage

It's definitely a combination. I drive somewhat aggressively through a lot of urban traffic in Atlanta, which has a well-earned reputation for traffic. But I think it's the tires more than anything. Keep in mind my Coopers are E rated and 10-ply (equivalent) so they're even heavier than some other brands of A/Ts in 275.

I also have ~60 lb front bumper (no winch though) and ~130lb sliders so that's a consideration.
