4.88 on Craigslist

Will the 4.88 gears from a 1988 4runner work in my 2000? I found a sweet deal in craigslist if they will fit. I can't seem to find any information on it.

That is a yes and no answer. Our rear ends are the same Toyota 8" however we have the Toyota 8" V6 rear end. In 88 they had the 8" and the 8" V6. They take different bearings on the pinion and wont work in the other housing. If it is a complete 3rd member then it will bolt in the rear. I am not sure if the front are the same.

So essentially I would have to change the gears and housing which I would then lose my e-locker. The craigslist ad come with the whole assembly, from and rear, but if I lose my elocker than to me...whats the point?

As Pikeman said, if the rear is already set up in a 3rd member you can just drop that right into your housing. The front are different, our Runners use a reverse rotation up front and the 86-95 were standard rotation.

Edit: Just saw your post...they won't work for you having the E-locker.
