4 cylinder 3rd gen question

Hi,

I'm looking at a 97 4Runner SR5 4-cylinder. What do I need to look for? Do any of them come with power windows by the way? All the ones I've seen so far don't have A/C or power windows, which is annoying and making me think I should just be patient and keep waiting till a good condition V6 manual one comes up. The only reason I'm considering the 4-cylinder is cause it's the only manual one I've seen in a while with less than 150000 kms on it. I know that the 4 cylinders use a timing chain, but was there something that needed to be changed on the chain periodically? Was it the spacer or something? Do I need to change the water pump as well as I know on the V6's, people change their water pump at the same time as the timing belt.

I have the 4cylinder, and I have everything like power windows and ac.

I have been looking for V6, but unfortunately, there's not too many manual transmission ones. I want one to be about 150000 kms or less, but all the ones I've been seing (all 2 of them...haha) have 220,000ish kms. I think I will probably keep waiting and watching until I find a decent V6. However, if anyone can answer my question regarding regular maintenance on the 4-cylinder, that would be great cause I want to know what I'd be getting into if I decide to get the 4-Cylinder. I know the timing belt and water pump need to be done on the V6, but I don't know what needs to be done on the 4-cylinder cause of the timing chain.

You do live in a cold climate so that's why you are probably not finding many with AC but if I were you I would hold out for the V6.

Nothing needs to be done on the 2.7 regarding the timing chain, unless of course you pile on so many miles you eventually need to change it. You should easily get 200k out of the T-chain assuming you keep the truck in good shape. The water pumps in the 2.7's don't seem to leak like the V6, so you should not have to go in just for that. I had a 2000 w/ the 2.7 and 5 speed and aside from heated mirrors it had every option an SR5 would have, and some that are not base SR5 options. The 2.7 does fine as long as you get the correct gearing, the one I had came w/ the larger tires and 4.56 gears, which made for high RPM's but decent power when you need it. I was in the range of 3k at 70 or a little higher in 5th. There are few issues on the 2.7, but the older ones had an exhaust manifold issue where they would often crack, they were upgraded in 00 so if yours does go replace it with one from a 2000.

My T4R V6 sure doesn't have a lot of power. I can't imagine what a dog the 4 cylinder must be.

Go with a V6.

Thanks for your responses guys. I guess I probably should wait till I find a nice V6. My other option was to wait till 2011 and get a JDM 3rd Gen Hilux Surf from Japan. The only thing I'm worried about is driving on the right side of the vehicle and servicing the diesel engine. I might go that route if I don't find a V6 manual before then though. (stupid import laws don't allow us to import a vehicle from overseas unless it is 15 years old, otherwise, I'd jump at getting a 2000 Hilux Surf SSR-G from Japan right now.

Seems like I would be more worried about spending two to three times as much on that vehicle just because it's JDM before I worried about driving on the right side...

Well, 2000 4Runners up here still run from $10,000 to $14,000 with like 200,000kms. If I'm gonna pay $10,000 to $12,000, I'd rather get the JDM one that has less than 100,000kms in it. At least that's my reasoning.

I have a 4cyl. auto, I know its not a manual, but I love it because of how torquey it is, it does take a little for throttle response in 1st speed and on the highway though, but still a great car.
