4 Cylinder MPG

Hey all,

I plan on picking up a 2000 4-Cylinder 4Runner (4X4) and I was wondering if it would be outrageous to see low to mid twenties as far as mpg's go.

The truck would be pretty much stock except for a tune up (synthetic oil change, plugs, wires, new air filter, and seafoam treatment), deckplate mod, and electric fan swap.

You should see 20-22 in the city and a little more on the highway.

4000lbs is a lot for the 4banger to move and the blocky shape of most SUVs simply doesn't return great gas mileage results.

I ran a 2000 4x4 2.7 5speed w/ the stock 265/70/16 tire package and the lowest of all 3rd gen gear ratios, 4.56 for close to 100k miles. Ron's numbers are pretty close to accurate, I generally could expect 19-22 mixed city and 22-24 all highway. Best I ever saw was 24.7 cruising across NY state w/ 3 people all our gear and my Germam Shepard. I tend to do a lot of short trips as I work close to home so I probably could have done better most of the time, 19-20 was probably the most common for me over the whole time.

The electric fan should give you a slightly better MPG, and more power to boot. I also ran all synthetic fluids in mine, never saw any increase in MPG w/ synthetics though.
