4 owners in 8 years!?!

I've been wanting to pick up a 2010-2013 trail for a while. I found one locally (2010 with 100k), but it's had 4 previous owners!!! Should I worry about this? I know and love Toyota's, but I'm a little weirded out being the 5th owner. Thoughts?

I think people put way to much stock in Carfax and similar, that give you ownership history. The only thing useful in that history IMO is knowing if the car has been a rental - I say steer clear of prior rentals. Other than that, why does it matter who was making the payments prior to you, or how many "whos" there were, or if Horton hears a who?

Maybe the first few owners had financial trouble and had to sell it, or it got repo'd, or they moved out of the country, or had kids and bought a Sienna, or didn't like the gas mileage and bought a Prius, or...

If it's in good shape and you don't get the spidey tingle that there's an issue, just buy the ****ing thing!

It looks like there is a decent chance that the 1st and 2nd owners are one and the same, but the other owners had it too ling of a period of time to have been a dealer.

i'm trying to think back when i bought my BMW, if i remember correctly i was technically the 4th owner but really the 2nd. it was dealership then someone leased it, then they bought it after the lease was over then i bought it. but carfax showed me enough details that i was able to figure that out somehow, i just can't remember exactly what it showed.

I have moved a few times. I noticed that CarFax listed an ownership change every time I moved to a new State. So my one owner 2012 4Runner lists 4 owners.

I personally would avoid a car that I knew or suspected had changed hands that many times. Could indicate recurring issues, and it increases the likelihood that you had a previous owners that didn't take care of things.

I had my 2011 SR5 for less than a year, great truck, loved that truck... but then a 14 TEP popped up... less miles ,better deal (I was getting shafted on the 2011) and "exactly" what I wanted.... so I traded the 2011.
Nothing wrong with it at all, just wasn't "the one".

yeah, good point. sometimes CarFax records multiple owners when the vehicle was really in and out of dealer inventory in some way or another.

I bought my '07 XC70 with 91k miles in 2012, I was if I remember correctly the 5th owner. Now, 5 years later at 202k miles, the car has been super reliable and I've never had any major issues with it. I'm actually the second person to buy that car from the same dealer, they had taken it in on trade, sold it to a local customer who traded it in a few years later to them on a new Honda. It was clean, had the options I wanted, and the price was great. It was about 3k under book at the time.

Anyway, it's not ideal, but it's not the end of the world either. I'd be more concerned with the condition of it. Take a good luck at the underside to look for signs of wheeling damage.

As frequently as people trade these, I'm surprised it doesn't have more...

Trades 10 for 11, then for 12 etc... Seems illogical but hey, to each their own.

something you should really look for is if a vehicle gets sold to an auction... a perfectly good vehicle never goes to the auction..

It hasn't been to auction. The last owner traded it in for an Armada for the extra room. They had it for nearly 3 years. The original owner, who I think it actually also owner #2 as well, had it for 3+ years. The owner in between the first and last had it for 2 years.
So at least it hasn't been passed around through auctions and the owners seem to have kept it a fair amount of time each.
It doesn't have any rust under it and seems mechanically solid.

I wouldn't worry too much. I had a car that I bought that was a year old but showed different owners. The first owner got married and because of that it showed as another event in carfax, initially the car was sold to my dad and I and then moved to only under my name. I owned it for about 8 years and it showed 4 owners even though only two people really owned the car.
