4-spd tranny less efficient than the 5-spd tranny?

Been searching around for some concrete numbers and info, but haven't found much. It would make sense to me that the 5-speed tranny would be more fuel efficient, but I could be wrong.

In essence, is the 4-speed slower to get up to speed or less fuel efficient than the 5-speed transmission?

Judging by this pdf it has a slightly taller final drive ratio so I would say yes. How much I couldnt say.

Hm, reading through that PDF I see lots of references to the V8 offered in Toyota 4runners, but it's most likely the wrong transmission since it compares the 02' to the 03'.

Yes the 5 speed is more efficient. Its common sense as you said; however, real world difference is 1-3mpg.

The performance is much improved though!

Heh, damn, wish my 03' Limited came with the 5-speed

Ah well, a 4Runner is a 4Runner, still runs like new and it'll last me till the end of the world.

EDIT: Considering performance, what is hindered by having the 4-spd?

In daily driving there's probably not much difference. Drag racing and slow off-roading is where the 5sp would shine. The 1st gear ratio is better on the 5sp which helps w/0-30 acceleration and slow crawling.
