4 wheel drive help

Hello everyone. I hate to sound like a real dope , but I just bought a 2004 4runner limited and left the manual at work over the weekend. I didn't get up to the part of switching to lo 4 wheel drive and am not sure what to do. What I did was put it on neutral switched to lo 4 and then to D and it made a real funny noise. Am I suppose to hit the differential lock button first? I don't understand how the vcs on/off or differential stuff work or when to use it and when not to. If anyone could please explain it, I would be extremely grateful. Thank you

Make sure that you're in 4high before you stop and switch to 4low, this way you wont get actuator grinding. It works smooth when I do it that way.
