4 Wheel Drive Question

I know to put my 4Runner in 4WD, I move the shifter knob from the "D" position to the "4" position, then put in "4HI" or "4LO", but what happens if I decide to put it back into the "D" position while the 4WD is on? Does it disengage the 4WD system? What happens? Thanks.

Mike,

The 4/D on the shifter is only to shift in and out of 'overdrive' as needed. It's not linked to the 4WD system. I hope I'm reading your question correctly.

Just flip that switch to 4WD H and vice versa while driving straight and below 62mph and you'll be all set.

I switch to 4Hi while in D all the time. So... nothing will happen, other than being able to go faster i guess :bigok:

Thank you guys for the responses. I just didn't know if it would take it out of 4WD or not if I switched from 4 to D with the shifter. I had a feeling it didn't because when I did, the 4WD symbol was still illuminated. Is it preferred to drive in the "4" position or the "D" position?

Only for the same reasons you would in 2WD, of which I see few. This is a argument on these forums, I say leave it in D most all of the time.

hi, i recently purchased a 2015 toyota 4 runner limited. 4x4. i am use to 4x4 with all of my toyota trucks from the past. my question is, HOW IN THE HELL DO I PUT THIS INTO 4 WHEEL DRIVE AND BE ABLE TO DRIVE AT A NORMAL SPEED DOWN THE ROAD. APPROX. 50 TO 65 MPH. it comes with a dial where u can put it into 4 low averaging 5 mph and 4 wheel low low in a creepy crawl mode. i am so pissed off because i can't figure out how to do it. As far as I know, no Toyota 4WD vehicle will go faster than about 35mph in 4Lo gearing. I know many members in the 4th gen section that regularly drive in 4Hi on the freeway with no issues. My V8 4th gen is always in 4hi and drives fine at freeway speeds. The limited has the same transfercase and should be just as capable in 4Hi.

no offense meant, but you guys asking these questions about 4wd NEED to read up on how to properly use the system before you really damage it.

It's a limited. It's full-time 4wd with LSD. You can't go 2wd, and if that was what you wanted, you should've bought a trail or SR5. They're part-time 4wd systems -- but without the LSD.

He's in the wrong section because he has a 5th gen (2015). 5th gen limiteds are always in 4WD, but if you want truck-like 4WD you have to hit the center diff lock button. A yellow light should come on with four wheels and an x in the middle.

For 4th gens the trim level doesn't matter, but V8 models are always in 4WD like the 5th gen limited.

Yep -- I've had both (and currently have a 4th gen -- my second). I should've mentioned the center diff lock, but to be honest, I wouldn't recommend driving like that for a guy who's asking this kind of question... Lots of harm could come of the truck quickly.
