4 Wheel Drive Question

I have a 2006 Toyota 4 Runner Sport Edition and was wondering how to use 4 Wheel drive correctly. I was wondering when one should be using the H4 option and the L4 option on the 4 Runner.

Also when should one be using the center differential lock. I was also wondering what is center differential lock and what does it do?
