That sucks, I just have the regular T-Case and haven't had any issues. But I will likely slide off the road trying to keep up with a mazda AWD mini van.

I wasn't aware until now that Canada issues drivers license's to children.
This problem is 95% of the time just a front dif sensor, $35-40 and about 10 minutes to fix yourself.
So I assume you aren't trying to say that the non multimode Tcases are 100% problem free right?
The multimode is not more nor less reliable that any other.
Mine is 12 years old and previous owner nor myself have had any problem with it so far.

Odds are this is a front dif sensor, I think they cost somewhere around $35-40 and its near the top of the front dif.
I believe its called a Center Dif Indicator Switch.
You could check the wires on your current one, unplug and replug, clean, etc to see if its just a connection.
I think you can also short the wires on the switch and then drive it to see if it shifts back and forth, if so then its the switch.
Just unscrew it and replace it.
There should be a Neutral postion and L4 position switch also, may have to check those.

Me too. I know two guys who have had to swap to manual tcases when their actuator went out.
Nunyabiz, I would not say that the multimode tcase is just as reliable as a manual tcase. It has electronics, and they do go bad.

Multimode Tcases are NOT AS RELIABLE as the manual Tcase. But hey what do I know , I only have 3 friends who own full blown mechanic shops .... do you think my opinion just came out of thin air? its based on real world experience.
Again , for what a multimode tcase does (not to much) ... its not work all the extra crap they put into the 4runners.

The 5-speed J-handle is the most reliable of all. No actuator in the t-case at all and no center diiff. You can't break what you don't got.
The fact that you even know this about the multimode tcases speaks volumes about them :biggrin1:

Not trying to convince myself of anything whatsoever.
I like probably at least 50% or more of everyone on here have a multimode case and myself have had no problems at all, really enjoy the 4Runner.

hopefully its not the actuator as Singtoe stated because basically that means a new transfer case and ridiculous $.
That is why its good to check the sensors, could be very simple and easy fix and do not trust what a damn stealership tells you, I wouldn't put it past most of them to tell you its the actuator even if they know its just a simple $40 sensor and 10 minutes to change it.
It could just as easily be the sensor, just short it and check it.
Thanks for all of your help. It was the front diff sensor. Toyota had to order one cost was $ 45.00. I took the old one out and checked it with the meter, it would work part of the time, cleaned it up a little and got it to where it would work most of the time. I put it back in and got it out of 4wheel dr. Thanks again you guys saved me a lot of money.
