$400+ oil change

I went in this morning, he showed me the PO's metal made in china filter housing. He claimed to be talking about replacing the "filter case", which attaches to the block, he was concerned the threads were messed up. He asked if I just wanted it all put back together, I agreed to that and he knocked $10 off the oil change. So $69 is what I'll be paying today.

So the big question is, "Is it leaking oil everywhere?"
 
Never go back to that dealer, find another even if it's far away.

I had poor service from one dealer nearby, now I go to one 20 miles farther when I have to.

I will probably skip my last free oil change for our Sienna and put on the metal cover for $21.

That's not a typo.

Labor is like 150-180/hr and they invent excuses that even something that takes 2 minutes is a "minimum 1.5 hour job." I got charged $145 after the CA dmv stripped my license plate screws and held my DL hostage as I hurried to the Toyota dealer to cut out the screw since I was away from home without my tools.

All the granola morons who think their Toyotas will "last forever" gladly pay 3-5k for needless maintenance every year.

could you go into more detail why the DMV stripped the screws on your licences plate? why would they touch your truck then confiscated your DL
Did I miss something?
 
There are about 5 quarter size drops on my driveway from it which started in the last couple of weeks. I'm sure it was collecting in the skid plate. The threads on this type of fitting do not stop leaks, the o-ring does, so it could have been pinched. So to say the threads are causing the leak is a lie.

I moved from CO to CA and got new CA plates. CA DMV insisted on keeping my CO plates (not required in CA, but they love to sell them to souvenir shops to make money) and they guy they sent out to remove the CO plates (they wouldn't let me borrow their screwdriver because people steal them) stripped the Phillips screws on the rear license plate because they were rusted in place.

They offered to let me go to the Toyota dealer to cut the screws out of the rear gate if I left them my DL so that I wouldn't leave and not give them the precious CO plates once I had gotten them off, since they had already given me the CA plates to install.
 
People suck! No one holds my DL hostage while I'm driving around without ID! There is got to be a law against it.
 
There is a labor standards and practices book for just about every operation on every vehicle. All dealerships and repair shops are supposed to go by this to prevent price gouging and unfair practices. It lists the operation and time for the average tech with the proper tools and equipment to do the job. For example: Oil / filter change 2020 4Runner 4.0 V6 - 1.5 hours. This times the shop rate, parts and supplies + tax is what you should be charged.

So, you could be screwed on any of those. Without checking the book - you don't know if the time charged is correct or fair. I know techs are rushed on operations like oil changes so they can make money on the time. Not every shop charges the same rate, so it may pay to shop around.

Holy shit. Wtf. That is some serious blue state behavior right there. They sent a guy to remove the plate? Are cali people incapable of removing a license plate the same as Oregon people cannot pump gas?

It could be threaded off-center or something, but that is really unlikely.

They tried to screw you.

Remember, its 99% of dealers which give the other 1% a bad rap....

As far as the OP goes, I've had my fair share of oil change nightmares as well. I've always changed my own, except when I was in college since I didn't have to facilities to do so. Jiffy Lube was pretty much the only option...

That's nuts. Last time I got new plates here in Texas they asked me to swap them in the parking lot and bring my old ones in. I told them I didn't have tools with me and could I please have my new plates. Never took them back and never heard anything.

I brought in three cars over 2 days. The only asked for plates once.
