4cyl vs v6 3rds

So we established a while back that the carriers are different between the two thirds, but what about the ring and pinion? I'm looking at a screaming deal on a used 5.29 ring and pinion, but they're from a v6 third, will they work in my 4cyl third?

Sweet doesn't even begin to cover it - I'm going to pay more for the pinion bearing than I am for the gears.

Considering the fronts were $75 new in box, and I expect to pay about $200 in labor, this could end up being one of the cheapest regears ever.

I forget--are you already running 35's, or are you just looking for some extra grunt for your "four squirrels"? Hope the gears work out (and you don't get sucker-punched with some cheap Chinese knock-offs)!

Im sure a Chinese knock-off can handle climbing stumps in his front yard :)

I think I have the bearing you are looking for. Is it slightly taller? If so PM me. It is a brand new Koyo bearing. I paid $65 for it originally.

Got 255/85 KM2s on the way, w00t! With the auto transmission what it is, 5.29 should bring me right back into the factory powerband.

:rockthrow:

Maybe he can do it now without the ramp? :trophy:

Maybe, but I'll still need the ramp to get up on your sister. :flipoff:

No, it's shorter actually, to make up for the long pinion head. Thanks for the offer though!

I'm running 245/75r16s, just under a 31, and the stock 4.30s don't cope well with them at all - it's driveable, but noticeably sluggish, and any kind of headwind or moderate hill makes it struggle. With my current gearing and the new 33s the truck would hardly be driveable (factory gearing for an auto with 31s is 4.88). I'm really looking forward to getting 5.29s and the 33s on. It'll be more streetable, and will help on the trail too.

Yeah that is the same set-up I want. Even though the 4.88 would be fine with my 5-speed, since I don't DD it, I'm thinking the 5.29 is the way for me as well.

Of course as we were talking in the other thread, it's all $$$$. Wife's not working outside the house now, decided it was better to keep doing the stay at home Mom thing, so my "build" is going a lot slower than I would have liked. I keep looking on CL though for that killer deal. I almost jumped on some 33 BFG, 4 brand new for $550, but they are for an 18". Decided I didn't want to have to pick up new wheels as well.

Did not want to make a new thread, so thought I would re-hash one.

I have a front IFS diff out of a v6 with 5 29 gears that came with an IFS lift I bought. The ring and pinion are both in good shape, but the gears in the carrier are shot. I have a 4 cylinder front diff, but now from my understanding the carrier will not work, correct? Can I put the ring and pinion into the 4 cylinder diff, or does it need to be in a v6?

I have another front diff out of a 4 cylinder auto, which I have read is the same as the v6 front diff. Is that right? Pretty much I am just looking to make a full front end with what I have.

the IFS fronts should be the same, v6 or 4cyl.

they will not work in the rear of anything. IFS front is 7.5 rear is 8" completely different 3rds.

2wd rears are 7.5". While the 3rds themselves wont work, the gears and carrier are interchangeable.

Yes, the IFS fronts are the same.
