4G T4R Recall

well Toyota has announced today they are recalling over 200k models of T4R model years 04-09 for acceleration problems. The carpet mats have to be modified cause it can cause the accelerator to be stuck in open throttle position. No remedy yet but will probably have one in April, owners will be notified by mail. sucks and I thought 4 runners were the only ones safe from recalls.

When reading all about these recalls for the last couple years, I've always had a feeling that it's mostly user error causing potential problems... but could never say with firsthand proof that this was the case. Now, I can: there's absolutely no reason to recall these floormats for "unintended acceleration" -- every car manufacturer would have to follow suit if it were even remotely easy to cause a stuck pedal with these mats, because you can cause it with ANY mat if you position it wrong... on just about any car.

It's completely ridiculous to me (and sad) that Toyota was shoved into such a hard PR position, having to do such frivolous recalls to keep paranoid consumers feeling safe and happy. I'm not a conspiracy theorist so I'll leave it at that, but I can't help but wonder why it wasn't another brand getting all this attention on a practically non-issue problem.
