4h--->2h (clank/clunk!)

As the subject states, I was switching out of 4WD and I heard a loud (loud enough to set apart from the rest of the noises sometimes encountered when switching in/out of 4WD) clank/clunk as it disengaged.

I switched it back in/out of 4WD and heard the same type of "loud" noise. I don't think this is "normal".

Do I need to be concerned? I had just rotated the tires the day before; did I put something out of sync by doing so? Your thoughts/feedback are much appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about it. When I shift from H4 back down to H2 at speed I don't hear anything. But when I do it say at about 5 mph or roll slow I hear an audible clunk sound. Even more so in a parking garage or enclosed space. Both my SR5 and Sport Edition do this.

I'd get some grease into those U-joints ASAP.

SG----the truck has < 8000 mi. Do I really need to grease them already?

AQ---I switched as I approached a stop...the second time I was under 25mph...

I know audible noise is one thing but this created enough feedback for me to feel it in the steering wheel...

Make sure that the steering wheel is straight, too. If it's turned at all, it can cause the noise.

I got more noise when my runner was new but now with 45K on the clock it makes little noise ........... Although I must say I think I hear less of a clunk after I had my front diff and transfer case oil changed out at 35K.

I never have my foot on the gas when switch in and out of 4wd and I always make sure im going in a straight line and never over 50mph.
