Is this a new 4R to you? How many times have you used the system? Many have noted that it seems to be difficult (myself included) to shift from 2H -> 4H -> 2H the first few times. After a bit it does gets easier and 'normal'. A few of us have had to put a good amount of force to shift it for the 1st couple times. Obviously do not push more than you think you should. Try a slow roll forwards, no gas, and try to shift, should make it easier.

You are moving the transfer case lever directly forward and it's not shifting out of 4H??

No, it will not...

Yes it is my 1st T4R(bought in 5/2010), this is my first time using the system... I'll give it another try tomorrow...

Thank you,

Tried shifting mine just yesterday, and it was difficult too. Admittedly, I haven't used 4H hardly at all, except a few times just 'cause. Better start working on it before snow flies.

afaik in cold weather the part time transfer cases might have problems shifting.

i think i read in the manual that you should try stopping and putting the vehicle into neutral before shifting it in and out of 4wd.

mine worked flawlessly today in -5 degree weather with plenty of snow on the roads. shifting was butter smooth.

:D

As they have said, it will loosen with a little use.

Also, when shifting while moving (not over 50 MPH), it is easier to shift in and out of 2H/4H while lifting off the throttle. Don't be afraid of the lever activated transfer case. Embrace it and learn to love it. It is real and proper and will be very reliable and long lived. Not much to go wrong with it. It is a feature I zeroed in on in my T4R TE. I've had several over the years and have never had a failure related to them.

Sometimes it feels like you haven't shifted the lever far enough forward and adding to the issue is that it will often take several seconds for the 4WD light to go off. It is not a very positive feeling lever.

i went into the mountains early this morning where it was -14 degrees. didnt have any issues shifting, not to say you dont have an issue but it does take more than normal force to move the lever.

formerly driving a 5spd i did not think it would require as much effort as it does. when i shift i use my palm to put it back into 2H. i suggest doing it when the drivetrain is warm. but as mentioned if you think you are applying enough force to break or bend something stop and go to the dealer

fyi, manual says to drive 10 miles in 4h every month to lubricate the components.

I have TE and have used my 4H and 4L extensively in the past two month (about 900 klm) without any problem. Yes, sometimes it does not go in 2H or 4H easily the first time. But it always works (2010 and older models alike)

I have had 4Runner in the past as well and three of my friends also have 4Runners.

To move back from 4H to 2H, push the leaver forward firmly while not under acceleration. If problem persist, stop, push the leaver forward, then driver in reverse for about 50 meter.
