4hi locking rear diff?

I have a 98 limited 4wd with the rear differential locker, my question is, when I turn on my 4hi is it supposed to lock my diff? I like to drive with my 4wd in the snow but I don't want my wheels losing more traction than it needs to..

It will only engage the locker when you tell it to (press the button) unless you have an auto locker like me. Then your locked whenever it feels like it!

Unless you have done the "blue/grey wire mod" you can't engage the rear locker unless your in 4-lo.

But when I put it in 4hi my rear wheels lock anyway..
And I know it'a only supposed to engage in 4lo.

What would cause it to lock itself when I put it in 4hi.? Would there be a way to wire it that way? Because whoever had my 4runner before I did, wheeled it. Could tell because there were scrapes on the spare tire and the bottom of the bumper like they dragged off a descent a couple times. And the sides were touched up but my fender flares were all sorts of scraped up.

its possible to wire the elocker up that way but that would be very dumb to do that. dose the light on the dash saying "RR dif-lock" light up? if not then my bet is your locker is not locking up, you only think it is...

what makes you say your dif lock is locking when you go into 4hi?

No it doesn't light up. What makes me think it is locking, is when I turn on 4hi and say turn, my inside wheel is turning faster than the wheel is traveling, causing it to screech on cement.
The wheels are moving the same speed no matter what I do.

that is normal, its just the "binding" from the transfer case. the transfer case take out a lot of the "slack" in the drive train. your dif lock is not engaging when you put your truck in 4wd. try putting your truck in 4low, and pressing the diff lock button(do this in a gravel parking or road) and then see if the light on the dash lights up, i bet it will and that will tell you the dif is locked
