4R drivetrain seems rough to me.....

This is my first 4Runner and I'm a little concerned about the non-smoothness of the drivetrain. It has just over 100k on it and it seems a little rough during acceleration, I gave the engine new plugs, air filter and that did help with a rough idle (the plugs were pretty bad).

I'm just wondering since this is my first 4runner if they are little rough (trucky) during acceleration?

V6 or V8?

You bought a car with 100k on it. Even though its a toyota maintenance is important - any receipts/ prior PM?
 
The 4th gen V6's are a bit "trucky". I am not surprised your making this post but on the other hand I might try to drive another V6 4th gen for comparison sake, you may have an issue.


As for the plugs looking bad: The V6 OE plugs are supposedly 30k plugs. If you changed out the originals at around 100k I am not surprised they looked rough. Were 3plugs NGK's and 3 plugs Denso's? If so they were the originals.

Yes, I believe they were denso and ngk, so they were original plugs.

It was a one owner, and according to the carfax and service records found in the vehicle it was service pretty regularly, minus the plugs anyway.

I figured too, find another one and drive it.

No definitely didn't happen overnight, it's been there since I bought it. It just seemed to be normal to me, even thought rough it's a consistent almost smooth rough, but have noticed that it does slightly change according to temp / weather. The changing to temp / weather could be in my head, but sure seems rougher sometimes than others.

Kind of a stupid post, but was just curious to the answer(s) I might get, you never know.

I can't speak for the V6 but the V8 with 123k is extremely smooth...it feels like it just rolled off the showroom floor. I've been so impressed with this truck - I've never had a vehicle with 100k+ that drove so nicely. My 0.02
 
I got a v6 4wd w/116000 on the odo, and she shifts as smooth as I could ever want, the only time I feel anything rough is when she is in 4wd and I put her in gear, otherwise the shifts are as smooth as any other toyota right off the showroom floor...

I think so, at least mine. This is my first automatic transmission so I can't compare but it is rougher than I expected. Particularly, the transitions between engine braking and acceleration and then, specifically, hitting the gas from an engine braking condition. Don't know if it's the electronic throttle control, torque converter grabbing, or what, but it's abrupt. It mostly goes away if I drive very gently.

Still love the truck, though, and will be keeping it a long time.
 
I have noticed that too, the tranny being flakey in non full stops, even just some slow turns when your off the gas.... that when you return to throttle it jerks, like it's not fully down shifting, more less in between gears.

I've read on here that this was a known issue.

Mine has definitely gotten worse, so hopefully the flush will clean that up.

I know you replaced plugs and air filter. But have you clean your throttle body/reset yet? Also what tranny fluid are you going to try?

I have not cleaned the throttle body yet, but plan to this weekend, and the MAF. What do you mean by reset?

I don't know what tranny fluid to try, and recommendations?

Seems like most of members here using OEM, Amsoil or redline. I'm using cheap valvoline max life. On this board, i've read very helpful posts by "CJ3Flyr", you might want to pm him for recommendations.


Reset ECU. Most of rough idle issue causing by airflow base on my experience and that's what i go look for if i see rough idle on my cars. Ofcourse, dirty TB could be one of reason. Reset isn't necessary long as you not unplug anything on TB, but i like to do reset while when my hood is open at same time. That's just me.
