4R Oil Change

One thing I've always done myself is oil changes. I bought a 2008 4R and I must say this is by far the easiest vehicle I've ever changed the oil on. Bought a filter wrench, perfect fit over the top at my local auto parts store for under $3. (none I had fit!)

Toyota filter about $6. Filter off from the top of the engine. The Limited with 18" wheels didnt require the ramps.

The dealer even threw in the crush washer free. Even Harley dealers get $1 for their tiny O-rings. 5Q 5W-30 Penzoil for $11 at Walmart plus about another .25 qt.

Sweet.

I have a container designed to collect oil and our local transfer station has a recycle barrel residents can bring oil to.

Alternatively in MA, you can return to the place you buy x quarts of oil, x quarts of used oil that they legally have to properly store and then dispose of by law.

Walmart AutoCenter. they are the best so far over any autoparts store. they collect oil, filter also the oil container. autoparts stores don't collect filters and containers. lot people use milk jugs to hold used oil. i have couple 5-gal water jugs, the kind sitting on top office water fountain.

My 3rd gen. 4runner is the worst car I have owned for changing oil, the 4th gen. V6 4Runner is the best car for changing oil.

If your 4th gen. is a V6, one little trick, when you loosing the oil filter, loosen it a bit, then remove the black nipple that is under the metal oil catch pan and with one hand put a 12 ounce plastic cup under the hole and with the other hand unscrew the filter. The oil in the filter will run out of the filter and the plastic cup should catch the oil. If you don't do that little trick, it can be a bit of a mess.

As far as the 3rd gen. it is going to be a mess, no matter what.

5' of 8mm inside diameter tubing from the nipple to the oil catch pan under the truck.

Well, that could work, not sure if you want to clean 5 feet of tubing, and running it through the car. I guess you could store it some where, if you don't want to clean it???

the 3rd gen you have to reach the oil filter from one of the wheel wells with it turned lock to lock right?
 
The easiest oil change in the world has to be the 4.0 L V6 on the 4th Gen T4R's.

The only way it could get easier is if you didn't have to do it at all.
 
THE worst in my opinion is the Honda 2.3L I had in a 2000 Accord. the filter is directly above the exhuast in between the engine and firewall, and it's sitting horizontally. I changed the oil twice, my arm got bruned by the hot exhaust twice and there's no way to catch the oil coming out of the filter and they got burned off after the oil change.

so the third time on, i had the professionals to deal with it.

Mine just ran out of warranty. I thought I should check the forum to see if there was anything I would run into. Thanks for the pointers. I think I will use the cup trick. I have a 2007 SR5 4Runner. I will post how it went when I am done.
 
The 3.4 was a pia but if you dropped the skid plate there was enough room. It was a piece of cake compared to a few of the late 80's early 90's FWD GM sedans. I remember one you had to remove the front wheel.
 
Since retirement in 03 I averaged 3,000 mi a year in my past 1993 Explorer. It d/n burn a drop with 116,000 mi on it and changed every summer. With my 07 T4R V-6 I’m told to chance it every 5,000 mi or 6 mo. Strange, a salesman told me that my daughter’s 2010 4 Cyl Toyota Highlander needed changing at 10,000 or 10 mo. I find the Dealers want to do more service than the Manufacture recommend. I normally go with the Manufacture’s recommendations for the warranty for the normal driving that we do.

I plan to try and drive up to 5,000 mi a year since I know oil can become contaminated. Just think what I was saving on gas. I walk 5 days a week and enjoy retiring from the traffic. BUT! I enjoy handyman volunteering (habitat, church and elderly) weekly, cutting my own firewood and I have a fishing Career. BUT only 3,000 mi is saying I'm not doing something enough. LOL. jow
 
If you want to make the oil change even easier, no kidding, get a fumoto valve. Well worth the $20 or so it costs. Check it out you will become a believer.
 
The oil filter and oil pan drain plug are close enough on my third gen Trans am that they both drain into my oil collecting apparatus. Still have to jack the vehicle up though.
