4R pistol puttin' place

Has anyone found a good place to keep a pistol in a 4Runner? Preferably enough space for a small pistol safe or lock box.

Thanks,
Glenn

Disclaimers - I have a CHL, and I do not leave my pistol in my vehicle unless I have no other choice.

I know there was a thread on this but I don't think it ever resulted in a suitable answer.

Have you flipped up the rear seat and checked the fit for a lockbox?

Sadly, I don't have the 4Runner yet. It arrived at the dealer yesterday but they have to ship it to me.

In my old 4th gen I really liked the hidden part of the glove compartment. Very sorry to see it gone. In my new 5th gen it just so happens that the tissue holder under the middle compartment is a perfect fit for a Kahr PM9 and two mags. :AK47:

I'll try the tissue holder.

On an related note, on a 3rd-row model 4R, do the second row seats fold flat? I hope I don't regret getting a 3rd row.

Yes, the backs fold flat with the cargo floor. On the regular 4Runners, the seat bottoms flip forward before the seat backs fold forward and this leaves significant space under the seat bottoms for hidden storage.

I carry a ruger LCP 380 and it fits nicely in the tissue holder, with my holster. Ill have to post pics when I get a chance.

I'm still struggling with this issue as well and as SeattleMike mentioned, our other thread on this hasn't come up with a solid answer. I sent Console Vault an e-mail today asking if the 5th Gen 4R was being considered for their product - I'd like to get one of those.

I have made the false bottom for my console as someone in the "better SAFE than sorry" thread mentioned, but alas, my G23 doesn't fit as I'd hoped.

Still considering a square lock box under the rear seat, but was hoping someone had a model that was tested and approved before I spent money on trial and error.

I have a question about cutting the inside of the existing console to make the G23 fit, but i probably need to attach pictures to best explain. The short of it is, what is under the raised portion of the bucket portion of the console - say right under where the coin holder is (side opposite the 120v plug)? I was thinking of cutting a hole so that the barrel of the G23 could stick out a 1/2", allowing the item to completely fit below the false bottom. If that question makes sense without pictures, I'd love an answer or a link to pictures of the console disassembled (the diagrams aren't clear to me). I'll find some pics and update so this makes more sense in a bit.

Thanks!

Thank you all for the input. Looks like I'll be doing the tissue-box holder thing and joining the lockbox trial-and-error efforts.

I'm spoiled in my old Explorer - I've got enough room under the back seat for a small safe. OTOH, my Explorer transmission is going out after 138K miles.

I'm willing to trade some interior space for the increased quality and performance of the 4R.

Agreed, both my Explorer and my Tahoe had room under the back seat for a full Gun Vault. I love the new 4R, but I do miss the space.

I just spoke with a guy at Console Vault and he stated that the 4th Gen is next on their list to build a vault for because they've had tons of requests. He's not familiar with the 5th Gen - less owners mean less requests, so it makes sense that we're out in the cold.

I'm also looking at this product: Console Vault™ - Gun Transporter which they make. The web didn't offer the size, but he measured one for me while on the phone. Outside: 12" x 7.5" x 3".

Now time to do some creative measurements and figure out if that fits under the backseat with the seats in both up and down positions. I also need to confirm that the cable can attach to something. Not the perfect answer, but it might work.

I think one of the smaller gunvault products (Like the Nano 300) might fit in the center console just loose. Does anyone know if there's anything under the center console we could use to secure a cable lock around?

I have a small locking case that I keep my Glock 26 in under the drivers seat. It has a cable that goes from the case and around the seat base.

Yea, if it won't fit in the console or there's no secure place for a cable lock, that's another option. But, doesn't it move around under there?

in the door, quick access to the handle, and I would shoot that 357 through the door if I had to haha.
I live in Louisiana, and in our state your car is an extension of your home, meaning I can hide a loaded gun anywhere I want in my car, and I don't have to let police know of it's existence if I get pulled over or what not (unless they ask, of course).

I think the issue for the OP (and me) isn't "where to have a handgun that's easily accessible while driving" so much as "sometimes I need to take my everyday carry pistol off like when I go to a school or post office. I'd like an easy to get to secure-ish place to leave it in the 4runner."

The Nanovault 300 sort of fits in the center console box. There's a bit of plastic trim near the bottom that makes the inside dimensions just barely too narrow, in the other direction, you can force the NV300 in, but it's not easy and it won't sit straight up because of the tissue holder and such. I would really like a nice looking install I can get to while seated in the drivers seat (so I can unholster and secure without opening the door and getting out) rather than just throwing it under a seat. I'm going to see if I can remove the tissue holder in the console lid and see if I can mount it there.
