4R went to daughter about a year ago, trans leaking...

With 275k I will admit I don't pay attention to it like I used too. She came in the house yesterday after being out with a girlfriend who just had a trans replaced in here car. She told my daughter the trans was slipping.

I checked it out and it was a quart plus low. Topped it off and all is good except...

I know the unit is "sealed", has anyone had a sizeable leak that required a repair? It's finally a bit warmer, so I'll be underneath it tomorrow.

Not to sound stereotypical, but that's freaking awesome.

My wife once called me because her car wouldn't start. It turned out that the car wasn't in Park. I also just found out that she thought that the oil change places put the current mileage on the little window sticker instead of the mileage for your next oil change which means that she's gone her whole life doubling the recommended oil change interval and didn't know it. In college her POS car's speedometer was malfunctioning and she drove the 200 miles home at least a dozen times at 100 mph thinking she was doing 70 and never once thought it was odd that she was passing people like they were standing still.

My point is that most of the women I know wouldn't have figured out something was wrong with the car until it completely stopped moving. Good for her.

03 was the only unsealed tranny, has dipstick. Changed to a sealed one in 04, no dipstick.

I will say that women just are not interested on how a car works. there are some other things going on in their mind. not all of them though are like that. but if you explain it to them, they'll remember.

That's because you have a 4spd A343F. All V8's came with the 5 speed which was sealed in 04 and later years.

Life gets in the way of things and I finally crawled underneath last weekend. At Toyota today, $77 later the part was ordered. Parts guys was shocked as the warehouse had 11 in stock.

Should be here tomorrow, then I'll have that helper this weekend!

This. Especially in northern states. My Yank' was a NJ rig, I busted a line the day I got her when I hit a bad pothole. Rusted line gave way.

Be prepared to have to drill out and retap at least one of the bolts that hold the lines in place. The bolts will be as rusty as the lines themselves. I had to drill out one of mine.

03-04 V6 motors had the 4 speed carried over from the 3rd gen. it was not sealed.

03-09 V8 got the 5speed sealed trans thats still used. 05+ V6 got the same 5speed.

Be prepared to have to drill out and retap at least one of the bolts that hold the lines in place. The bolts will be as rusty as the lines themselves. I had to drill out one of mine.

Mine have been soaking in trans fluid for at least a year! Should be interesting!
