Im writing this thread from a bar I found next to where my 4runner kinda broke down...
It's was running just fine this morning but when I tried to start it 10 mins ago it would start without problems, but it will idle really low at like ~500rpm
When I press on the accelerator pedal it won't rev up and it sounds like its choking!
Recently replaced my air filter and o2 sensor but the car ran perfect for 100-120 since i have replaced them.
My best guess at this point is MAF sensor but just wanted to here your opinion

I would assume the check engine light is on? if you know anyone close with a scanguage thats where to start. Sounds like the MAF or the throttle body- there's also a air valve under the throttle body that helps control the idle speed which could be bad also.

So I was able to drive the car home!
I went back there today, cleaned the MAF sensor but the car was actuing up again...(CEL came ON) I was like WTF and decided to disconnect and reconnect the battery to reset everything... that worked!(CEL went away)

The car got me home (24mile trip) without any problems, then I stopped in front of my house and it was idling fine..
Just went outside to test it again (this is three hours later) and once the car idled for 2-3 minutes it started acting up again... CEL is currently OFF!

If you are like some; put in a K&N and oiled it as directed, it will foul-up your MAF sensor and throttle body. You'll have to clean them out. I did not oil mine when newly put it cause it was oily already but a week after, it started to mess with my idle speed and turned-on my engine light. It lasted several days but eventually went away. I just had a situation where I had to replace my idle valve but it was cause it was idling too high ($368 w/labor), it may need some cleaning out too. Other than cleaning out these three things, there is nothing that controls idle speed mechanically.

wierd, I did put in a K&N filter that I got used on ebay and the filter was oily but not too much... the car ran fine for like 50-60 miles before it broke down today.
I think you are right!
I will clean the the MAF and throttle body tomorrow and inspect everything for dirt/oil hopefully that helps!

I love my truck, I've had it for two years and this is the first time i'm having problems with it:cry2:

Hey I have the same problem I had a K&N filter and got rid of it. Cleaned MAF and throttle body. my 99 4runner is still idling at 500rpms or below once it warms up . Have you had any luck in figuring this problem out ?
