4Runner 2010 Trail Drive System Sheet

I created & attached a 'cheat sheet' showing operation conditions for drive system on the 4Runner Trail. This may save drivers flipping through the manual.
The information was compiled according my understanding of the manual description. If anyone see an error or improvement, please let me know.

I think some of the people on here might be a little confused about what trac is. It is basically a brake system that gives you LSD front and rear when in 4wd with no throttle control (2wd is a different story). So when youre in mud or any other type of trail where you want traction, but a locker is not needed, trac is great. For example, your in 4hi and instead of stoping to put it in 4lo and in atrac, you can just continue into the loose mud, once your tires slip trac will activate and brake the slipping wheels (LSD effect) sending power to the wheels with traction. Its the same concept as atrac but just allows a bit more wheel spin (which may actually help in mud). By turning it off your turning your 4runner into a open diff 2wd (one wheel up front and one in the rear), trac has gotten me through alot and hopefully you can change that in the graph so its not depicted as a hindrance.

Every time I go off roading I turn off the side airbags, just as insurance if I do something stupid, don't want to spend $$$$ with airbag replacements.

(The chart information is taken directly from the user manual of the 4Runner trail without interpretations, so Toyota claims that disconnecting TRAC can help rocking the car back & forth in mud or snow based on their experience.)

We can also create user tips thread based on owners real trail experience.

Great job. Do you happen to have it in a PDF or Word doc?

FWIW, I really like my Husky liners (front/rear), they fit great. Never been caught in the door or under my feet. They feel a little lighter and thinner than I expected but also seem like they will hold up well.
 
How is the fit of the Husky Liners for front, rear & cargo?
Is the cargo liner covers only the sliding tray?

The front pieces fit very well. The rear piece is one piece and it also fits well. The cargo tray is a different story. I had to cut the cargo liner into two pieces - one piece for the sliding tray (measured twice and cut once), and the second piece for the rear of the cargo 'bed'. Otherwise the liner didn't fit well with the hump. But the quality of the rubber is top notch, IMO. (that last sentence didn't sound right)

Did you use the liner that made for the sliding tray?

Toyota is correct. In mud or sand or deep snbow, you want to use the locker, NOT TRAC. Although in concept it is correct, in real world TRAC will tend to bog you down (aka lose momentum) because TRAC always lags behind actual traction condition. In addition, TRAC may de-throttle the engine when slippage is sensed...thus, further killing momentum.

For me, this is how i would use the system. TRAC is for on-road all-weather use. I would not rely on it off-road. Off-road, you use A-TRAC and/or rear locker. Terrain Response or Crawl Control is good when you're in 4-HI. When you need 4-LO (aka severe terrain), i would just rely on A-TRAC and rear locker and shut everything else off. If you're not sure of yourself in terms of speed, then use CC in addition to A-TRAC and locker.

TRAC only interrupts the throttle in 2wd. If you are in 4hi, when ATRAC and locker are not available, TRAC works great and should be left on.

Hmm, did that change for the 5th gen? For 3rd and 4th gen 4runners, TRAC does de-throttle you whether you're in 4wd or 2wd. A-TRAC does not, but that is available on in 4-LO. This is why i recommend using the Terrain response (+/- CC) in 4-HI...it is better than relying on TRAC.
 
Im not sure, but if we're talking about trail only 4runners then yeah just use the terrain select but for sr5's, TRAC should be a good lsd front and rear when in 4hi. Of course you have ATRAC in 4lo, but there are times when 4lo just isnt needed. Someone should just head out, test, and report. Keep in mind you have to let TRAC activate, it takes some gas but you'll see the light come on and hear it.
 
this weekend i went camping in baja and managed to find my self y some very nice trails that had the possibility to push the car a little fast so i stepped on it i took the traction control off and tried to do take a few turns sliding the car, to my disappointment i could not do so the traction control or stability control could only be turned off at low speeds but as soon as i pushed the car it automatically turned back on, in some cases at least in fast off road driving you want the car to slide some, did i do something wrong? am i missing something here, thanks

I think you should be able to keep the VSC and traction control off if you hold the button down for 3 seconds.
 
I think I talked about this before with someone on here and they said the manual says you guys can turn VSC off and it stays off. But on tacoma's after you turn it off it will come back on after you get past 30mph. That sounds like what happened to you.
