4runner 4x4 insurance?

Hey guys,

Picked up a 1998 4x4 4Runner with 168,000 miles a couple of days ago. Just got insurance and guess what it costs me a month... $98. Seems kind of high for an older car? To compare I also have my 2008 350z Base Stock and it has 30,000 miles. I pay $126 for the Z under the same coverage. Both have full coverage. The 4R just seems kind o high to me. Lady over the phone said rate was 'high' as the 4R is an older car and has a higher chance of being totaled.

Still...

4Runner is worth ~ 4000-6000
350z is worth ~17000-19000

I guess I'm not understanding the insurance industry rates?

The badge "4x4" and others like "turbo" almost always double the rates. Think they figure you're gonna have more fun and in doing so be more likely to wreck the vehicle.

why do you have full coverage on a 12-15 yo suv? your insurance co is only gonna give you 5K max when you total it, they will short change you every place they can

I have full coverage and pay almost half what he was quoted per year on my 4runner, and im 19 and the primary driver, but there are 4 other cars on the policy.

Why not full coverage? If i wreck i want money back...

Full is the way to go, but that is a little pricey. Have any "strikes" on you state license?

My agent explained that it is not so much of those who drive 4wd but the amount of parts it costs to repair them, ala the transfer case, CVs, etc. if an accident occurs.

do you guys plan on wrecking your rigs in the next few weeks!? think of the money you would save it you just had liability, then take that money your are saving, put it into a good mutual fund or CD account or at least a money market account, every month putting the $30-40 or so in there and pretty soon you will have enough with intrest to buy and build a second runner or heaven forbid replace the "wrecked" one, and it wont have a salvage/branded title. unless i own money on something i dont pay for any extra insurance on it, its point less, you will never see it back when your vehicle gets totaled. all the money you have dumped into it for what? nothing, you will pay way more in the extra insurance than you will ever see back(unless you total out that vehicle in the first 18months)

Well mine is $95 a month thru Progressive and to the ones who say "why do you have full coverage?" I either say in my case because I have to for my T4R loan...or when it's paid off, I don't have a few grand laying around to get another rig...some of us don't have those awesome jobs we are going to school for just yet...hahaha :)

And I have 3 speeding tickets on my record :/ seems I always get one about every 15 months damit!! Last one was for going 60 in a 55!!!!!! Thank sweet baby Jesus we have freedom of speech cuz that cop got an earful- ok sorry I digress :)

well dont run into people, have basic liability and uninsured motorists and call it good, if someone else hits you thats on them, their insurance will cover it, you shouldnt need to have full coverage, unless that proverbial black cloud fallows you everywhere or you are accident prone, just saying. -i dont have a lot of cash either, i work 3 jobs(one of witch i just throw money into and get no return on -my own company) and have a wife who is in nursing school and two small kids, not to mention a house payment and everything that goes with that... its all in how you manage what you have... this isnt a money management class or forum so i wont lecture, especially sense i dont know everyone specific situation(nor do i) and im not trying to judge, just trying to give out some helpful advise. i too am still fighting the holes in my pockets

Insurance isn't something you gamble on, and Accidents aren't something you plan.

If you wanna risk losing $5k-$8k go right ahead, but i most certainly don't, and if you have a good driving record full coverage really isnt too much for a 4runner...

The 'black cloud' appeared over me last summer: a thunderstorm pelted my runner with golf-ball-sized hail.

I decided to just live with the minor dents (I can hardly see 'em), and took my $1,500 Allstate payout and did some upgrades.

If you live in a severe-weather location, you might want to keep comprehensive coverage. Or, just get a savings account going as your insurance, as the above poster mentioned.

Of course, it's all about risk, and your specific level of risk tolerance.

I have full coverage ($500 deductible) for my '00. It was about $10 cheaper for liability for 6 months. I figured I would pay $10 dollars for full coverage. I pay $228 every 6 months with Progressive.

However I do have two vehicles under my policy with no accidents or tickets. But that will change since my wife did $10k in damages to her DD('06 A4).

I wasn't ragging on anyone- my main point was to say that FULL coverage is required by my bank so that's why I carry it..and my rate is my own fault :/

Amen!

I just received my insurance renewal for my '97. $274.00 a year for full coverage.

But I do have two other cars, a motorcycle, and a house insured with the same company. Being older tends to lower insurance rates too.

My best advice is to call around for the best rate and policy. I've found that rates can vary widely for the same coverage, even between agents that are supposedly representing the same insurance company.

just bought (making payments) a 2000 4runner limited with 180,000 miles and i pay 167.00 full coverage. mind you i do have a heavy foot but only one ticket is on my insurance all others were over 2 years ago

@The Kid, I have to disagree. This is bad advice for those who value their rigs.

1) Liability is a terrible option; don't do it. Think of the loss when someone hits your car in the middle of the night and drives off. Something similar happened to my cousin, luckily she had full coverage.

I only pay $70 a month for full coverage on my 4Runner with a $500 deductible. I have USAA and live in Southern CA; no accidents.

2) most CDs are only paying 1% right now but you can get up to 5% with a mutual fund. Not that the stock & bonds market is safe, the Euro is falling apart in real time as I post this. Volatility is new norm.

This is simply not true. Just ask Pikeman, his thread listed that he totaled his 4Runner when an LBJ failed and got around $8500 (CASH minus $1500 salvage) from USAA for the vehicle's value. If he didn't have full coverage he would have lost it all.

Kid, from your signature you are clearly a Devil Dog and therefore can apply at USAA. Why not protect your rig, which is pretty nice btw :)

go one, listen to 'the kids' advice. ive been told the same many times, and i started to do this on a honda i own and have saved a coupla' grand so far...

USAA is considered one of the premium insurance companies. The dont exist to provide the cheapest insurance but instead to protect military families with high quality insurance that pays out when needed. There will always be cheaper insurance but in the long I think you get more with USAA. I believe they are a not for profit vs an insurance company.

I am a vet and it is true the in order to apply you must be part of the 1% who serve past or present.
